Orton finally heading back to Chicago?

08:07 AM ET 03.07 | Lovie Smith admitted recently that the Bears would look for a better backup plan behind Jay Cutler, and it appears Caleb Hanie will not be in the mix. [Veteran Josh McCown] replaced Hanie as the Bears starting quarterback for the final two weeks of the season against Green Bay and Minnesota. McCown impressed the Bears' coaching staff last season and is considered a strong candidate to be re-signed, perhaps as the No. 3 quarterback. That would allow the Bears to pursue a more high-profile No. 2 quarterback in free agency, such as Kyle Orton, who might strongly consider returning to Chicago in a reserve role if he fails to land a starting job somewhere else in the league.

I almost feel sorry for Orton. Almost.

Not a bad choice. Orton has proven that he's capable, although he seems to lack the leadership qualities of a good starter. But, I suspect he'll end up somewhere like Miami where the starting QB situation is less obvious, and he might get a chance to either win the job or at least be the placeholder until a newly-drafted rookie is ready for the ball.

Any team that could get him to be their back up QB would have the best back up QB in the NFL.

This could also extend his career. He could command pretty good backup QB bucks too.

If true he'll bolster the chances of the Bears going far into the playoffs. Cutler is brittle so he'll see some action

I'd rather have McNabb as a backup ... and I'd rather have a ham sandwich than him.
