08:26 AM ET 03.08 | Jeff Samardzija can now joke about the NFL career path he didn't choose, but he's very serious about a new path with the Cubs. After throwing three scoreless innings against Kansas City in his spring debut Wednesday, [Samardzija] agreed with Dale Sveum that he's "on a mission" to win a starting spot. "That's 100 percent correct," Samardzija replied. "I hold a whole lot of stuff inside, but I have a big chip on my shoulder, especially the older I get and see my football skills diminishing. I have to understand I need to start pitching good." It wasn't all that long ago that Samardzija was defensive when asked about his decision to choose baseball over a possible NFL career.

I thought this guy was headed back to football after a disasterous 2009-2010, but he finally figured out how to pitch last year. I'd like to see him as a starter but he is badly needed in the pen with Marshall now gone. He could also just turn into Kyle Farnsworth

The key here is that Marshall is gone, so why would the Cubs try to develop him as a starter, considering the depth at the position that is already on the roster. Theo Einstein screwed up royally by trading Sean Marshall - surely I'm not the only one to see this!!!

How would you know already? Give Travis Wood a shot and let's see what he can do.

I'm having a hard time really getting up the energy to care about this.
