Reyes would have stayed for less

08:27 AM ET 03.08 | If it were up to Jose Reyes, perhaps he's still in Queens. [When David Samson] said Tuesday that [Reyes] was after every dollar in free agency, it seemed to contradict the shortstop's December complaint that the Mets "didn't want me." "He said, 'I really want to play in Miami as long as you pay me $1 more than anyone else,'" Samson said. ... But people close to Reyes have insisted that was not the case. According to sources, Reyes would have strongly considered a somewhat smaller deal from the Mets, both in years and dollars, and was shocked when his longtime team did not make an offer. Reyes signed a six-year, $106 million deal with Miami, and would have seriously entertained returning to the Mets on a five-year deal.

Aren't the Mets basically bankrupt at this point?

I don't blame the guy from getting out of NY. If they had re-signed him, his checks would have bounced.

Morally or financially???

Definitely a bit of both.

Gimme a break. He's a me first ball player. His actions display that.... pulling himself from game 162 after he got a hit to secure his batting title said it all.

Yep! For once the Mets made a brilliant move. Stay away from Reyes! Guy's like Reyes only play half a season, and once his legs are gone he will be nothing more than a overpriced (Zito style) contract.

Just look at the rea l contract.... the Marlins didn't give him 106 million, they back loaded his deal, Reyes is only making 10$ million each of the first 2 years (less than he made last year) and then he is making $22 million a year for his no leg days. This is a pump and dump signing by the Marlins that they will regret.

Heck if you're Alderson you might tell the Marlins to eat all but $5 million a year and the Mets get Reyes back for 25 cents on the dollar.

Unless Reyes was going to kick in some of his own funds to pay off what Mets' ownership has to pay in the Madeoff scandal, the Mets couldn't have afforded Reyes at any price!

I wonder what the over-under is for Reyes going on the DL this season?

March 8, 2012  10:50 AM ET

People who would like to have a sit down with Jose Reyes if this is true....

-Players union rep
-Marvin Miller ...if he's still alive
-Scott Boras
-and any player still alive who played before free agency....

Male Bovine Fecal Matter!!!!!!

Reyes has been talking about getting paid to the last two years!!!

March 8, 2012  11:50 AM ET

Let's see....Reyes said....."I really want to play in Miami as long as you pay me $1 more than anyone else". Now, WHAT ARE THE METS SUPPOSED TO DO, read his mind? Say what you mean, and mean what you say. And the Mets are to blame? And I'm not even a Mets fan!!
