08:45 AM ET 03.09 | If it were up to GM Martin Mayhew, he might be looking for ways to sell, say, Mike Tolbert or Cortland Finnegan on Detroit. Instead, as the new NFL fiscal year commences Tuesday and the free-agent frenzy opens, Mayhew and Lions president Tom Lewand will be stuck in their offices like CPAs, trying to squeeze the books for every available dollar in hopes of keeping their own key free agents home. "I don't foresee us being in a position to go out and make a lot of aggressive, marquee free agent moves," Lewand told season-ticket holders last month. ... The Lions have 20 players eligible to become unrestricted free agents Tuesday. They also have three restricted free agents they plan to tender.

in that case, try to just get what you need, not what the fans want

Well, it was interesting seeing the Lions win a few games. We'll wait until the next decade to see it again.

They have to be so worried about treading water they can't look to get much better. Very bad sign.

The Lions are not the only ones with Cap problems, it sure does make it impossible to keep your team together

That's a consequence of having had a top draft pick for the past five years or so: you draft good players, they play well, and when their rookie contract is up, they merit a big salary boost.

I'm guessing that's what they mean by "trying to squeeze the books for every available dollar."

Thats the irony of the NFL that I like, the money side of it. You suck for many years getting all those high number one picks, then the reality sets in that you have to pay those few people the big bucks and everyone else gets squat.
Now your faced with losing players you can't afford and there is nothing you can do. Interesting stuff really.
If I was the Lions I would be moving towards dumping my high draft choices for more middle of the draft picks so I could afford those players, keeping the core of the stars in tact. Its called the Packers model.

The article is from the detroit News, not the Detroit Lions. The Lions say, quite correctly IMO, that they will use their resources to keep what they have rather than to get new.
Every NFL team lives (or dies) with the cap. Some manage it better than others.

The owners who really run the NFL want to clear the books of there dumb mistakes, so they created a cap, this allows them to get rid of ageing Old Timers without them imbarassing themselves (Hines Ward etc). The teams with the most cap money are the losing teams with the exception of the Pats who really dont give a rats ass about ther Veterans. So the winning teams have to sharpen their pencils, the weak teams will sign all the players the strong teams drop for less money, and The winning Teams will keep on winning because their Rookies will be stronger than those old Timers. Get It?

The Pats do a good job of not only hanging onto their veteran players but attracting veteran FA's as well.

I hope the Lions enjoyed themselves in their one playoff game this decade. Looks like they might have a hard time getting back anytime soon. Megatron is awesome, but he can't continue to make the rest of the team look good forever. With these cap issues, the arrow is no longer pointing up.
