07:38 AM ET 03.10 | No one has to worry about Mark Sanchez's feelings anymore. Once they missed out on free agent Peyton Manning, the Jets finalized a contract extension with their own quarterback. The team agreed in principle with Sanchez on a three-year, $40.5 million extension on top of the two years he had remaining on his old deal, locking him up through 2016. The terms of his new contract are five years, $58.25 million with $20.5 million guaranteed over the first two years, according to a source. There are an additional $10 million in escalators that could bring the total deal to $68.25 million. Sanchez becomes the sixth- or seventh-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, depending on what scale you use.

Gotta give the baby a bottle before he cries, eh ?

Peyton wasn't coming to New York!

Over before it started....Washington could use Manning...They love older "experienced" on their way out QB's...

He had two years remaining on his contract.

Why give him a 3-year / $40.5 million extension?

Hmmmmm wonder how Mark feels with the "hold your nose" vote of confidence

March 10, 2012  08:28 AM ET

I suppose they had to do something to show support for Mark Sanchez. I wonder if it will bite them in the butt in the end.

Looks like he will be there after Rex has gone.

This move is the very definition of the word dysfunctional. No wonder Manning wouldn't look at them.

2 years left on a contract, and they tie up this much just before FA?

The Jets "missed out on free agent Peyton Manning"?

That implies the J-E-T-S had a chance. And maybe they did. I bet the conversation went like this:

Mike Tannenbaum: "So Tom, what are the chances of Peyton finishing his career in a Jets jersey?"

Manning's agent Tom Condon: "About one in a million".

Mike Tannenbaum: "So, we still have a chance?"

If Rex can't get control of his team this coming season, that might not be too much longer.

Yeah, hurry up and extend a deal with Dirty Sanchez, sooo many teams want to steal him away...

Mark has to cut down on the TO's- but he did have his best statistical season last year- the Jet problem last year ran WAY deeper than the Qbstarting with his Coordinator - who's #1 & #2 best plays were .....run up the middle on 1st and 2nd down- EVERY timetheir O line which was BAD, the Dline couldn't get to the Qb and the safeties couldn't cover their shadowsHe did fumble the ball away too much, but it's mainly cause he was running for his life most of the season and he was alyays in 3rd and long cause the coordinator was a moron- who didn't understand the importance of PACE and flowI, as aJet fan- wouldn't have extended his contract as there were 2 years left- but I truly feel that Qb isn't the problem, he has proven the ability to lay playoff football. He will never be a HOF caliber qb- but NY can win with him

All true, and he has got better every year. But as long as he is the QB for the JETS, everyone will just say he sucks, like they do the coach and the entire organization. Not many QB's win in the playoffs going into Manning's hometown and Brady's back to back. his worst season as a pro is 8-8. 3500 yds and 26 tds in his third year. Look at other QB's in their third year. Eli 3200 yds 24 tds. Ryan 3700 yds 28 tds. Roethlisberger 3500 yds 18 tds.

With Al Davis gone, it's nice to see the Jest step up and continue his Commitment to Excrement.

I know they're trying to make nice with Sanchize after making a play for Manning, but still: why extend a shaky QB with so much time still left on his deal? Bad, bad move.
