Pineda's lack of velocity perplexes Yankees

10:02 AM ET 03.11 | To be fair about this, Brian Cashman opened Yankee camp three weeks ago saying that expectations were too high for Michael Pineda. But at the time, he talked mostly about the young righthander's need to develop a better changeup. He surely didn't envision fastball velocity being an issue. Yet here was Cashman on Saturday, admitting he's not sure why Pineda's heater isn't lighting up the radar gun. His fastball hovered mostly between 89-92 mph against the Braves, which is a long way from the 95-97 mph that convinced Cashman to give up Jesus Montero for him in the January trade with the Mariners.

cashman has to acknowledge pineda's overweight, this has to be a big impediment in the rookie pitcher, all what the yankees GM should do its to increase the running schedule for pineda's health and better velocity in the pitcher's arm!!

the pitcher its overweight, clearly this its at tough camel hump to jump over, best thing to do??? make the player run 10 miles every day untill he gets the acurate weight, after that things would be back to normal!!!

A little early to know much. The good news is that he is getting work with his other pitches, and that was what they wanted to see.
I thought it was his slider that was his out pitch anyways.

When this trade was consummated, everyone bashed the Mariners and claimed that the Yankees were getting a steal. Not so fast...
Perhaps the Mariners knew something we didn't. Perhaps the Mariners have some insight as to why Pineda's numbers dropped in the second half last year.
Plus, Montero looks like he will be a good hitter for a very long time.
Maybe this trade was lop-sided after all.

It's a little early yet to be worrying about a pitcher's velocity, but I'll bet Joba will have some sympathy for him since he has had to endure those questions every year.

not everything that shines its gold, then again you do have to understand, pineda its young and has alot of life in that pitching arm of his, with a little tuneup and a rigurous training the guy would gain the velocity and the stamina, plus the yankees could be the first team to acknowledge the change and the improvement in their new pitcher!!!

its doubtfull, the trade was fine and nothing wrong with that, itsn't like he has to have a surgery to fix some ligaments or to have surgery to remove chip bones from his elbow or something like that, give time to the rookie guy he would get better in a few weeks or so!!!
