08:03 AM ET 03.13 | Carl Nicks said Monday that New Orleans finally made him an offer he deemed "respectable," though he reportedly hadn't made a decision on whether to accept it. Up until Monday night, Nicks was disappointed that the team hadn't made any contract offers or serious attempts to keep him. Nicks, who turns 27 in May, said his goal is to surpass the $8.5 million per year of New England Patriots guard Logan Mankins. But Nicks also hinted that he might consider taking less money to stay with the Saints. ... "My goal is to get more than ($8.5 million per year). I feel like I deserve that. But I never told them, 'If you guys are in the ballpark, I wouldn't consider it.' I play with Drew Brees. We always have a chance to win."

Was hoping the Cowboys would be in play for this guy... I guess that $10M salary cap hit put an end to those dreams.

Cowboys pulling back?

Redskins conducting business as usual.... **** Goodell.

Loyalty is admirable , but if the table was turned, The Saints would cut him in a New York Minute!

Only so many contracts to renegotiate...

His point about Brees is correct. His contract, however, is still up in the air, correct?

March 13, 2012  08:51 AM ET

Don't sell yourself short just yet Carl.

March 13, 2012  09:09 AM ET

did he, by chance, use the word 'real' in describing the offer?

March 13, 2012  09:19 AM ET

If you are being paid anywhere near $8 million a year, and you are on a winning team, you've got the best of both worlds. It is very easy to see his reasoning.

March 13, 2012  09:20 AM ET

Stay with the Saints if you care more about winning than you do about money

Dallas was 12+m under before Spencer got franchised and the 5 m hit for this season plus RFA deals of about 2.5 m.

From what I have read, Dallas can restructure several deals to free up another 12+ m in cap room and then cut both Newman and Buehler getting them another 8m.

So...with the cap hit, Dallas is still sitting around 20m in cap room, which is PLENTY to be able to get a Guard, Corner, Saftey and sign Draft picks.

Nicks at Guard, Carr at Corner and Robinson at WR would be my first three signings...then I would bring back Elam due to the lack of any decent saftey out there. Draft a Corner, Inside Linebacker and Saftey and hope you hit on 2 of the 3.

Solid plan; I'm not thrilled with Elam, but you're exactly right about the available S's out there.

The only guys who care about winning are the ones who already have their money.

Give me Dwight Lowery he's worked with Jerome Henderson before and only is 26. Made the transition from CB to FS and could be picked up cheap.

You could get Dwight Lowery for safety cheap. He's worked with Henderson before, he's 26 and he's a transition from CB to FS. Gives you some flexibility.

As for the draft, if he's still there, take Dontari Poe at NT. He's like having a Larry Allen on the nose. You can move Ratliff beside Ware and every team you play will have to focus any extra blockers on the left side of their line.

Plus there is always the extra pay on the side for the cheap shots...

March 13, 2012  03:13 PM ET

Nicks better go talk to Aaron Rodgers about a Hometown Discount Double Check.

It's sad if your gonna own the team & be it's GM, you should at least hire a guy who can add , mutiply & divide numbers. The league will not add this guy to your Cap! And by da Way, just a small note Jerry, before you got here the Old Coach used to have guy standing behind him, he had 2 Jobs. 1) Don't get the wire tangled on the head set which he would sometime listen to and 2) Count the number of players on the field for his Team. Hire a guy like that increase his responseabiliy to counting time outs and will get you 2 more wins with no cap, I can be reached in New York, my best subject was math & I should be able to handle the wire!

At least he isn't going to the LOSER eagles as previously reported....
