Hawaii counter-offers Jones
As of late Sunday night, June Jones was still deciding between taking the SMU job and returning to Hawaii, according to agent Leigh Steinberg. Steinberg said he expected a decision Sunday night -- or early this morning Dallas time. SMU athletic director Steve Orsini did not return a call seeking comment. While Jones was in Dallas meeting with SMU president R. Gerald Turner, Orsini, trustees and the school's search committee and enjoying dinner with boosters at a local steakhouse, Hawaii supporters made a tremendous 11th-hour push to try to keep Jones. It had seemed a foregone conclusion that Jones would accept SMU's five-year offer of between $1.7 million and $2 million a year, according to two sources, after reports surfaced Saturday that he had tendered a resignation letter before flying to Dallas. But on Sunday, Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle called to intervene. David McClain, the president of the University of Hawaii system, called with a third, "amplified" offer, Steinberg said.

Hawaii has to come through and keep this guy if they ever want to be taken seriously in division 1 athletics.

You don't know what it's like to be a season ticket holder of a team that goes 0-12. The tailgate parties were the best part, Hawaii tailgate parties are second to none, brah. Then, it was all downhill from there.
Then, Coach June comes and things suddenly change for the better. He doesn't want to leave. It's not about the money, he has a lot saved up. This is about changing the mindset of a few narrow minded local yokels and doing what's right.
I hope it all works out because if he leaves, everyone, from Lingle on down, will have a big, black eye.

I've been to 3 Hawaii home games and Juice is right, pretty good tailgaters.
One problem though. The fans stayed at the tailgater because they damn sure didn't make it to the game.
Attendance-wise, you could have fired a gun in there and not hit anybody.
That was the late 90's though. Things change.

i hope jones stays, hes been nothing but good for this program here.....but its UH and the athletics department that has to step up. the facilities are a joke. the high schools here have better locker rooms and weight rooms. bottom line is UH is a buch of cheap ****....they expect some much of thier employees, but dont want to pay them what they deserve! Jones biggest comlaints are the facilties and the lack of pay for his staff and recruiting budget he get......50k!...come one man. UH is cheap!
i wouldnt blame Jones if he leaves.

If we believe Jones then the issue is about the state of the athletic department more than just his pay. Obviously, he's smart enough to know that all he'd have to do is say here, match or beat this offer sheet. The fact he's been so successful and Hawaii was going to allow him to coach this past year WITHOUT AN EXTENSION or plans for renovations to the facilities - that just shows how piss poor they are at making Hawaii an upper echelon DI school. That said, he could have a lot of fun with Hawaii, he's relatively young so demand a huge ocean mansion, tax free for his life and that of his spouse, and CostCo membership free-o-charge too ;-)

I have mixed feelings on the situation. I'm a huge Hawaii Warrior fan and know the importance of June staying here as the head coach of Hawaii, All he has accomplished here and the impact he made with the football program. As he had said in the conference that half of his being will always be with Hawaii and I understand that his request for better facilities, his office, higher pay for his coaching staff etc. I'm sure had an impact on his decision but a lot of what had him leave also he says is the challenge of the building of a losing football program.
But I also think that, that coaching position could have been left for another
confident coach.
Making the decision to leave Hawaii after a succesfull year even though they didn't win the Sugar Bowl, they still got there, a dissapointing loss at that, why wouldn't he stay and continue with his success in Hawaii where he wanted to be in the first place where money wasn't an issue. U.H. athletics would diffenitely take him seriously and meet all of his requests. I know the saying "a little too late" but there's so much that he leaves behind here but he is a religious man and I guess this is another calling for him, so we thank him for what he's done here in Hawaii & wish him well in his future, he's still young & might even return.

Well, looks like the bumbling Herman Frazier's days at UH are numbered, like until Tuesday. Serves the moron right, not only for his handling of June Jones, but also the Sugar Bowl ticket fiasco and the handling of Riley Wallace's last contract.
What an idiot; he'd also be best served getting on a plane and leaving Hawaii as soon as possible.
