Why trading Kessel now makes sense

08:21 AM ET 03.15 | By dint of his very acquisition, Brian Burke anointed Phil Kessel The One in Toronto. Yes, he's an elite scorer, a gifted skater and attacker who can score 30 goals just by falling out of bed. ... Yet the fit with the Leafs isn't there. He's no leader on a team still developing internal leadership. He's not combative or a fierce adversary. He doesn't bring size to the equation or pluck or two-way excellence. So now what? Well, with the club having fallen into a deep crevice that already threatens to affect next year, as new coach Randy Carlyle is already finding his record stained by this troop of players, Burke has now fallen upon decision time for his signature player. Fish or cut bait time. And cutting bait makes the most sense.

Only 1 up on Montreal, and 7 on Edmonton.

Of course, trading Kessell makes sense. Just ask the Bruins.

I dont always agree with Damien Cox, but he is 100% right on with this one.

Carlyle knew what he was getting himself into when he took on the job.

you beat me to it Spiny. I had the exact same movie line pop into my head reading this.

And perhaps the Irked One is going to suggest they change the ice surface to eliminate the corners to help Kessel....

Kessel is a joke. Boston knew it. He is a bad seed in the locker him and his me first attitude did not fit in Boston. I just cant believe we found a sucker to take him for what they gave us. Seguin, Hamilton, Knight.

I am not so sure it's stupid. Carlyle certainly isn't a fan of Kessel's style. You might as well trade him and get full return while he is still putting up numbers, do you think he is going to have numbers next year while Carlyle is trying to choke out 2-1 wins every night? This team needs a complete heart transplant... might as well blow it up and start at the top..

you may be right. i remeber the same kind of thing when he got aAnaheim, and he had a similar issue with Selanne

I think it's entirely possible that Burke and Carlyle may be gone before Kessel.

March 15, 2012  09:46 AM ET

The Leafs will get Nash in the off season. Fact.

Leaf ownership should package all three of them and trade them for a clean urine sample as they're obviuosly on drugs.
