Skinny on Megatron deal: Only $78.25M

08:00 AM ET 03.16 | As is generally the case, there's more than meets the eye when it comes to Calvin Johnson's reported $132 million contract. Here's the real story on the deal. It's an eight-year, $131.95 million contract. Until, however, the team chooses to fully guarantee $3.5 million in base salary in 2018 and $3.5 million in base salary in 2019, the last two years will void, making it a six-year, $96.7 million deal. So, basically, the last two years are phony, for now. Factoring in the $18.5 million Johnson already was due to make in 2012 before the extension, it's a seven-year, $113.45 million deal. Dropping the phony-for-now base salaries for 2018 and 2019, it's a five-year, $78.25 million contract. Not eight (or seven) years and $132 million.

good for Megatron, but how much is guaranteed?
Mangler.

But wait! There's more! If you factor in an average inflation rate of 2%, the net value of those out years in 2012 dollars is significantly reduced.

He's guaranteed 60 mil, no matter how the years break out, i think he did just fine.

So.....he's only getting paid a butt-load of $$.......not a super-butt-load??? Any way you slice it, there's nothing "skinny" about this deal....

something goofy going on when a salary deal requires an explanation - though, the same could be said of costs associated with government legislation, buying a condo, or sending a kid to school.

We knew this yesterday. It was a cap move. Jeesh!
the Lions were in cap helll and everybody knew it. Matt Stafford had his $17 million cap hit lowered to $9 million by calling the rest of it a bonus and spreading it out over four years.
They are kicking the can down the road until the new tv deal raises the cap number for every team.

Megatron is a pro's pro. Odds are good that he won't start grumbling about an extension three years into the deal...

At least Pro Football Talk is quoting a reputable source. The St. Paul Pioneer Press gets its stories from Cooper and Creepy on the night shift.
