Irish dealt significant blow Thursday

08:22 AM ET 03.16 | There are always going to be bodies, but few were expected to make such an impact at Notre Dame as Tee Shepard -- until his surprising departure from the school Thursday. [The 6-foot-1, 186-pound Shepard] was expected to compete for a starting spot at cornerback, where the Irish lost 2011 starters Gary Gray and Robert Blanton to graduation. ... Despite there being options, Shepard???s loss can???t be minimized. Even though he never played a down, his loss is a hit in both quantity and quality. And as many signs as there were throughout his recruitment that he could eventually land elsewhere, the timing of his departure -- two months after officially joining the program and days before spring practice -- still makes it a surprise.

He will have to sit a year if he transfers,, for such a highly touted recruit he sure has not seen much playing time. One story seems to say the kid has some kind of learning disability,, still that's no excuse to walk away from an opportunity of a lifetime. He'll be back.

If this kid put as much time into his studies as he did on his Twitter account we wouldn't be talking about this. The SEC will gladly take him.

If indeed Shepard is having trouble adjusting to collegiate academics, he's not the first true frosh to do so. Should this be his situation, then he should enroll at a JUCO, play immediately while getting his base classes under his belt, and jump up to a FBS school to get a four-year degree.

You really think Davonte Neal will ever get in shool at ND? I hear it's iffy at best. The transfer of highschool and player saying dad made him sign with ND. He's been tweeting about looking forward for playing for UA........I wouldn't count on him.

What are you hearing about him out of ND sources?

A tweet is the mechanism by which the X-Box generation gets their 15 minutes of fame.

article mentions he has had a hearing problem since early childhood, and has to read lips or use a hearing aid (and the impaired hearing apparently has impaired, to some degree, his speech)
