Howard, agent headed for a split?

08:08 AM ET 03.16 | Dwight Howard's version of The Decision, to waive his contract's early termination option, didn't come without personal cost. Howard, 26, had been getting the hard sell for the better part of a year from his agent, Dan Fegan, and marketing people of all stripes that Orlando didn't cut it for a star athlete of his stature and with his aspirations of global fame and popularity. New York in general, and Brooklyn in particular, was where Howard needed to go. ... [Deron Williams] thought Howard was on his way. So did the Nets, having been kept in the loop by Fegan, who essentially was staking his reputation on it. His reputation is neither here nor there, but it's hard to imagine his relationship with Howard continuing after this.

Of course... when he's old and declining the magic won't think twice about trading him for assets so while he's young he also gotta focus on where he can make the most money... aint no loyalty in this game. Get the money while you can. Afterall what will he think of his agent if he went up to him to say... ya Dwight.... we're emotionally attached to this city so lets stay and hope they fix the roster... forget about all the money and fame in New York and Los Angeles... duh!

Has this guy ever done anything bad/wrong that isn't someone else's fault? If he feels the advice he was getting was bad, shouldn't he then sign long term?

I havent heard on any airwaves or online about him blaming his agent...And even if so oh well he is a grown man and his agent has to make money too, so of course he want Dwight to sign a contract elsewhere so he can get paid now instead of later smart thinking on his part it just backfired.

Under the new CBA, Orlando can offer much more money than any other team over the long term. Your argument is invalid. Additionally, the argument that you have to live in a big market city to get paid for endorsements, etc, is a falsehood in the modern age of the internet and social networking. Also, don't forget, Orlando is known as "Hollywood East" with Universal and MGM studios having a large presence there. The NYC/L.A. argument is a red herring.
But on the subject of blaming the agent: I think Fagan was likely the culprit for all the bullscheiss that went on this year. He's not making a dime off of Howard at the moment, and won't make a dime off of Howard's extension. From a business perspective, Fagan would only line his pockets with some bread if Howard signed a new contract elsewhere -- that's why he was trying to convince him to opt out.

I agree with this statement, but I thought Dwight said he wanted to go to a Big Market and named the cities where he wanted to go.

Dude makes 30 million a year, how much more does he need? He wants to win...period. Based on what I have seen neither one of NY/NJ teams know what they are doing. Orlando was a good team a few years ago and they will be in better position next year to trade away some bad contracts...who says they can't get D-Will as a free agent to come to Orlando?

Howard needs to man up and take responsibility for his actions. Blaming somebody else is always easy.

After all the talk about leaving; Howard should have kept up the heat on Orlando and pursue his demand for a trade. Now it becomes harder to get the trade he may seek next season because teams that have asset will make change to their teams and won't be interested in Howard. His very best move now may be to settle down and focus on making the most out of the Orlando situation. Good Luck! "Loyalty", as Dwayne Wade said.

And the more money the player makes , the more money the agents makes. Not sure this guy actually had Dwight's best interests at heart. Gotta give the guy some for credit for finally taking control of his own life.

The agent is paid to give advice. Dwight just finally decided the advice was bogus. Good for him.

Howard staying was a win win situation. He got his $ he got to stay in the city he loves and he has a better chance in winning. I mean the Magic are 3rd in the east and it would take at least 2 years if he went to Jersey to even contend.

True, he did. But considering his rationale has been highly irrational, it's hard to figure whether he was speaking from his heart or out of his arse.
Another point that often gets over-looked: Florida has no state income tax. New York has not only state, but city income tax. 30 million in Orlando (where housing is cheaper, the weather is better, and the women are hotter) is a helluva lot more than 30 million in NYC.
