Smith considers dumping his agent

08:08 AM ET 03.19 | Alex Smith had to be wondering where he fit on Tom Condon's client list. [Smith] always has had the reputation for being smart and rational, so it's not surprising that the 49ers' unsigned quarterback is considering changing agents. Smith is represented by [Condon], who has another client, Peyton Manning, whom the 49ers are reportedly pursuing. Seeing a conflict of interest, Smith, according to a league source, might drop Condon and his agency CAA, which represents several NFL quarterbacks. Condon figures to make a lot more money negotiating Peyton Manning's next contract than Smith's. Reportedly, Denver has offered Manning a five-year, $90 million deal.

9'ers don't land Peyton, they're doomed.

Wait... This is funny though... His agent is the one running him out of town for his other client.

The subject in the headline should reversed.

If Alex Smith were that smart and rational he would've come to this conclusion a lot sooner, like everybody else did.

March 19, 2012  08:38 AM ET

Really, how can Condon negotiate with the Niners for both Smith and Manning? It's a conflict of interest. And how can Condon look Smith in the eye after this?

Eff 'em both, Mr. Smith. Get a new agent and sign somewhere else. See how Mr. Ed and In-Bred Jed like looking for a quarterback this late in the game.

March 19, 2012  08:53 AM ET

If Smith is smart and rational, how can he pay this agent that stabbed him in the back?

March 19, 2012  08:54 AM ET

Condon is just trying to give something to negogiate off of the 49ers for
He dragged Brandon Lloyd to SF to try and give something to play the Patriots off for...which Belichick didn't buy in

If Manning doesn't sign with SF Condon will say well my client is hurt and Miami is offering $8 million a year- what can you do for me

It is a strange place they put themselves in to.
If Peyton signs with someone not named 49ers, and smith signs with someone not named 49ers, then who, not named, is the 49er QB?

March 19, 2012  08:57 AM ET

As the market dries up, his value goes up. supply/demand.

March 19, 2012  09:00 AM ET

An apparent conflict of interest. The Niners offered Smith a contract before Manning was even released by the Colts. Smith rejected the offer. I wonder if his agent advised him to reject that offer because he viewed San Francisco as a potential location for Manning to continue his career. That's the kind of thing that spawns lawsuits.

With Brady Quinn now off the market, that's one less mistake for the Niners to make.

if he were a defense attorney, condon strikes me as the sort who would have the defendent plead clemency on the grounds of being an orphan, after receiving a conviction for murdering the parents.

Exactly... It's almost like they know something we don't.

Read this morning they're in the hunt to land Mike Wallace, as well.

Randy Moss, Marion Manningham, and Mike Wallace would equal 3 #1 WR's on one team.

Then they have the TE Vernon Davis.

Another lure trying to catch Mr. Manning.

All this coming off of a game away from the SB, last season...

Interesting thought...could be on to something
