Smith likely to swallow his pride

08:06 AM ET 03.20 | The 49ers quarterback is no stranger to indignities in San Francisco. So Alex Smith, are you really going to take that? Probably. Smith, the NFL's version of Charlie Brown, has spent a career having garbage heaped upon him. From the days when former San Francisco coach Mike Nolan surrounded the quarterback with an assortment of skill-position players straight out of a thrift store, to now when Smith has reached the apex of his career, Smith is forever unappreciated. ... Will he look at the 49ers, tell them to shove it and set sail for the sublime shores of Miami, where the Dolphins reportedly offered the same deal as the Niners? Not likely. "Alex isn't that type of kid, never has been," said a person who knows Smith very well.

Yeah, they'll come to terms. SF has to know that they aren't going to find anyone better at this point in the off-season. And Smith has to know that he's on the best team he'll ever play for. They can blame it all on Smith's agent and put it behind them.

I guess it comes down to how much the kid wants to win.

That sure as hell isn't in Miami.

He'll be back. There's nothing like the smell of a new contract to let bygones be bygones.

Not sure I want to hear about guys swallowing anything in that city.

Grand prize Winner.

I don't know why he has to swallow his pride. The Niners made a play for a first ballot HOF QB who is clearly better than Smith is even at this point in his career. How can you blame them even if the guy was going to take his job? Besides, in the end it's going to net him a bigger contract.

Maybe his agent wasn't selling him out all along as everyone thought and used Manning to leverage the Niners for Smith and not vice versa. Manning didn't want the NFC from the beginning because of Eli. If he wanted to win and win now, the Niners were the choice, but he'd have to face Eli to do it.

I think the Niners got played and were really never in the running.

South Beach is not a good career move.

March 20, 2012  08:53 AM ET

I would love to see him stick it to the 9ers. He takes that team within one game of the SB and they want Manning? I'd be pipssed too. Unfortunately, that's not likely to happen.

Harbaugh will be swallowing a lot too. They can have a swallow off. Would make great reality TV.

March 20, 2012  09:10 AM ET

Smith is jaded. = $$,$$$,$$$

You think that was the quid pro quo between Condon and Manning? Interesting. Maybe five years from now, in Manning's autobiography, we'll be reading more about this.

Manning's definitely a gamer; what about Condon?
