08:07 AM ET 03.20 | Did the Seahawks sign Matt Flynn to start games? That's the next question that follows the Seahawks' addition of free-agent quarterback Flynn after the sides agreed to a three-year contract. Flynn's going to be the guy, right coach Pete Carroll? "I don't know that," Carroll said Monday in a conference call with Seattle-area reporters. "We're very clear on how we delivered the message. We now have the opportunity to have an open competition." Ahhhh, competition. That's the key word for Carroll, one that he used when the Seahawks acquired Charlie Whitehurst in 2010 and one he's repeated for the past two years as Seattle coach. ... "I've always been a firm believer in competition," Flynn said.

Competition? TJack? Whitehurst? The Seahawks finished 7-9 last year. They didn't offer Flynn a 3-year, 26-megabucks contract to hold a clipboard while they repeat that kind of season.

"Pete, this is your billionaire boss. The computer geek. Flynn is the quarterback. Don't think anything differently."
Carroll- "Umm, OK. Who is this again? The school president?"

The competition is between Whitehurst and TJack for who holds the clipboard and who folds the towels.

Immediately after saying all this, Pete Carroll called owner Paul Allen and assured him it was all just PR coach speak BS.

I believe Whitehurst is gone. He's back with the Chargers.

Saying "you get the job" and saying "if you beat out Tarvaris Jackson you get the job" really aren't different. At all.

Other than Pete Carroll, does anyone else doubt that Flynn will be the starter?

Well, then, I guess TJack has the towel-folding job locked up. Now, about that clipboard.....
You gotta know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em.

The funny part is if Flynn is such a lover of competition, he would have stayed in Green Bay and tried to beat out Rogers.
We all love competitions we know we can win.

So, with Whitehurst back in San Diego, Seattle needs a third QB...Matt Leinart?

I gotta ask: what was the deal with Whitehurst anyway? Anyone know? When Carroll came in, he's one of the first guys he went and got- from SD- and now he lets him go without much of anything out of him.
What happened to Charlie Whitehurst? (could be the title of a crime novel)

It makes you wonder whether Pete was even in on the Flynn deal.

"Seahawks won't hand Flynn the job"
Maybe I'm just punchy, but something about "hand" and "job" in the same sentence...
