Devils coach rips Torts for bloody start

08:35 AM ET 03.20 | Depending on your perspective, the opening to Devils-Rangers was either exciting or a case study in creating a brawl. Before there was ever a drop of blood spilled on the Madison Square Garden ice, there was venom spewing from the mouth of Rangers' coach John Tortorella. When the Devils put their fourth line of Eric Boulton, Ryan Carter and Cam Janssen on the ice to start tonight's game, Tortorella yelled some choice comments at Devils' coach Pete DeBoer. "I guess in John's world you can come into our building and start your tough guys, but we can't do the same in here," DeBoer said after the Devils' 4-2 loss at Madison Square Garden. "He's either got short-term memory loss or he's a hypocrite. It's one or the other."

The Devils started that line for one reason. What a load. And it backfired...especially for carter, who ran that noted tough guy Dubinsky in the last game. The last time the Devils were at MSG, he did the same thing, and the gloves dropped in 2 seconds. Torterella is culpable for matching for certain,(really? Bickell taking the opening face-off?) but DeBoer is full of it. And one last note by the way (sorry Nard, if you do read this) martin brodeur may be the biggest crybaby to ever strap on goalie pads. Is he one of the best ever? Without question, which makes his schtick all the more maddening. Early on (5 minutes or so in?) a shot came in, he save it and two Rangers came toward the net...unobstructe and then circled away, no snow, no nothing. (can't say the same for Pariese 5 minutes later). No one was within a foot of him. he started whining (working?) the officials right there. Next play, someone skates by, and he whacks him with his goal stick, (something he was to repeat all game). I care little how good he is/was or how many rings he's won...he is a punk, and I shall always think of him as such. Even my wife, who while a big fan, hasn't quite grasped the nuances just yet...was asking, "Why is he doing that?" "What is he complaining for all the time". And before someone starts the "Queen Henrik" stuff, understand that if you want to be true to the truth, he gets run pretty regularly. Yeah, the defence should stop that more...Know what i think? I think instead of merely waving his hand in front of him, The Avery should hve just punched him in his hypocritical sister -****ing face.

They showed the "faceoff" on the NHL Network last night, as they said "this happened about 30 seconds ago..." I've seen fights on the opening faceoff before....but 3 of them at the same time? Didn't see the whole game, so didn't see all the other stuff going on....but then they kept interrupting with "and here's another goal from the Bruins/Leafs game...."

March 20, 2012  09:16 AM ET

The last time these teams met Torts started Prust and Rupp and Rupp started a fight right after the opening faceoff. I don't see how this is any different. The visiting coach sets the opening line-up bro. Torts did it first. Can't reasonably be upset when DeBoer gives it right back to him.

As far as goalies whining about getting run, well lately all goalies have been getting run. In the Pens game the other day Bryz got bowled over at least 3 or 4 times, and we bowled over Fluery at least 3 or 4 times. That's the game these days bro. I don't like it, but if the Lucic Miller incident tells you anything about the state of the game, it's that it truly is open season.

The answer to the final question on this article certainly isn't short-term memory loss, just ask Sean Avery.
Spiny, did Torts start his tough guys in NJ. That is the simple question. Settle down. He did, so him complaining is just Torts being Torts. The queen gets run no more then any other goalie, it's just you have your Ranger blinders on. The Queen just complains with his corny fedora hat on after the game, and all the Ranger fans go crying our goalie gets run more then yours. Avery couldn't punch Brodeur in the face because Avery only hit people when they weren't looking. If they were, he would turtle.
And Marty really couldn't care less if Ranger fans think he is a punk, just like the Queen could care less if Devil fans think he is a whiner (cause he certainly isn't a winner - Stanley Cup that is, ohhh I just had to throw that in there.)

Cromster, exactly exactly and EXACTLY. Wow it suprises me that Ranger fans would be a sore winner, especially Spiny. I may have to rethink my commisioner vote. Can't have a leader with blinders on.

March 20, 2012  09:21 AM ET

I agree with Kberg. It looked like a "Faceoff" remake. All they needed was a shot of a ref saying, "Too much too soon." After getting embarrassed by Pittsburgh Torts knew they absolutely had to beat New Jersey. All I can say it, whatever works.

To be honest, i make the best points when the point of contention has nothing to do with my team. I try to be a hockey fan first and a Flyers fan second, i really do try, but it doesn't always work that way. With that in mind i won't be too hard on Spiny for the blatant homerism, because next time, it'll probably be me.

Funny thing, I have never been accused (with good reason) of wearing blinders. As far as the tough guys out there, I think I made it clear they were BOTH (Torts and Debeors) guilty. It seems the "2 wrongs don't make a right" lesson was never taught to either of these guys. In the interest of fairness, yes, goalies have been hit more, but as i see way more Ranger games than any other team...simple conclusion
Speaking of blinders, I see you have yours well worn as well in regards to The Avery and not even mentioning brodeur's actions.

March 20, 2012  09:29 AM ET

I would agree, except this did happen last time also, only quicker (2 seconds as oppossed to 3)
And there is a fair amount of animosity (there's a word you won't see in the NASCAR threads) between these teams

We all do, it's what it means to be a fan. That's why I don't ever say even if this didn't happen to the Devils in a sentence, because I always look differently when it comes to them. Though this year I think i took my homerism out a little, even thought a couple hits on Devils were fine and not suspendable. But there is no fault it rooting for your team.

what...it isn't taking "quoting anymore? My last was meant to quote kberg

March 20, 2012  09:31 AM ET

Oh yeah!!!??? I am ****ed the Devils didn't win that game. ;)

Yep. We are all guilty of it.

Sorry as Cromster said maybe its your homerism instead of blinders, but thats 6 of one a half a dozen of another so to speak.
As for Brodeur's actions of slashing guys or complaining, I see all goalies do that. You just have a hatred of Brodeur so it annoys you more. Again we all get you don't like him and whatever he does will annoy you, and maybe your wife too, haha. We are all OK with that, we all will go on rooting for our teams and be OK. I will let him know the next time I see him though that Spiny really doesn't like you though.

March 20, 2012  09:35 AM ET

I stand corrected. I never thought of myself as a homer..(I too espouse the hockey before Rangers edict) But you all think so, I trust most of your judgement
Just a bit ticked at the nonsense I guess.

March 20, 2012  09:38 AM ET

I <3 New York.

March 20, 2012  09:39 AM ET

nard (see your # 16)
My last point...Yeah, I don't think Marty will ever be on my Christmas card list. And again, I never deny his accomplishmentson the ice...truly a career to be admired
And yes, other goalies do it...but no one then goes down like a french soccer player when someone skates by him and whines about crease trafiic. I played goalie too you know, traffic is part of the gig.
