08:32 AM ET 03.21 | On the surface, it sets up as a good fit. Anybody still wondering how much recruiting Chicago will affect the next Illinois basketball coach found out Tuesday. More than anything, concerns over navigating the minefield that is our city's high school basketball landscape gave Shaka Smart pause when considering whether to take the Illinois job, according to a Division I coach familiar with the search. A CBS Sports Network report that Smart would stay at Virginia Commonwealth "unless something drastic changes in the next 24 hours," reflected what two sources described as reservations the 34-year-old coach expressed specifically over recruiting Chicago.

I live in Champaign, IL...home of the University of Illinois...Cronin would be a HUGE mistake...IL fans don't want him here...would be a step backwards..and it the general consensus that Shaka would play well here...he would energize the fan base and make the recruits coming out of Chicago take notice that Illinois is going to do what it takes to win...and where do you get the idea Illinois needs white assistants? What do you base this on?

WTFJJ does race have to do with anything? In 1986, Nolan Richardson moved to Arky & I had to listen to all this BS about a black man coaching in the south. THAT WAS 26 YEARS AGO! Grow up! Richardson did well, Anderson will do well. Grant has Alabama going in the right direction. Every hear of John Thompson, Stan Heath, Chaney @ Temple? There are over 100 African American coaches currently working in colleges across the USA. So, it works everywhere but Chicago?
Everyone likes to bang on the south for narrow mindness (and we have our share), but you prove racism and stupidity is not a regional problem. If I were a fan/alum of Ill, I would be offended by your irresponsible and STOOPID statement about the need for "white assistants".
Shaka Zulu?? Really?? Classy....actually that would be an immature joke for a 4th grader. Something tells me that's about on par with your intellect. Keep spewing the stupidity and hatred....it's getting you the attention you are obviously craving on these boards......IDIOT!!

Not sure what the list looks like for AD Thomas, but if he can't pull in Shaka (which would be HUGE considering Shaka is one hell of a coach, and even better person because he's sticking to his word/contract that VCU gave him), then I'll throw another name out there. And this cat can coach, and what a pay back it would be for this coach and Champaign IL to stick it to Bloomington, IN by bringing in Steve Alford.

I was hoping that my Dawgs would go after Alford. I don't know if Alford wants to play the Chicago game either. If the Illini can control Chicago, then Illini basketball should always be near the top of the B1G.

What about Martin @ K-State? I think this guy can really coach. Miami missed the boat on him last year, but if he can recruit to Manhattan, KS he can recruit to anywhere.
IMO, Ill Moo State or USC jr could all do worse that Martin
