Time for St. Louis to call Oswalt

08:12 AM ET 03.22 | The season after pitching nearly 300 innings hasn't gone according to plan for Chris Carpenter. Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak took a run at free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt earlier this spring but couldn't meet his price. Now would be a good time to dig a bit deeper into Bill DeWitt Jr.'s wallet. [Carpenter] now looks iffy not only for the season opener, but for the first chunk of the regular season as well. It turns out his nagging neck problem may not be as simple and treatable as first hoped. ... [The Cardinals] have a terrific opportunity to return to postseason play this fall. Now is not the time to be cautious. So revisiting the Oswalt Option is imperative.

No, it's NOT time to call Oswalt. Plan B is already in place

Oswalt may get his asking price after all.

So the solution to Carpenter with a neck problem is Oswalt with a back problem? Yea...

I agree. I'm comfortable with Lynn, and K-Mac is a decent backup plan as a 5th starter. They have no need to panic by throwing a new offer at Roy.

I'd still like the Tigers to kick the tires on this guy.

How much is Oswalt going to cost?

Whew, I thought you said K-Mark, I thought you might be hitting the bottle or a crack pipe or something. Oswalt is the next rent an arm, may be a plus or minus, but probably not a huge impact, especially for what he'd command.

Why? do they need the # of a good back specialist?

March 22, 2012  10:23 AM ET

Nope ... In Lynn we trust.

Oswalt must come "out of the closet" about his ulnar issue and some GM will make him an offer.

He won't command much as evidenced by the fact that he's not on a team right now, anybody (looks in Yankees direction:) that throws huge money at this once good but now dilapidated pitcher is going to have a very poor ROI.

Don't look at my team, your team had him last year, you resign him. I got Pettite to worry about.

March 22, 2012  11:09 AM ET

Lynn is still untested....big risk. Why get too far behind in the standings before pulling the trigger. Remember the WS last year was all based on an INCREDIBLE run....not a full season of superlative baseball. New manager.....no Albert? And you're going to test the fans with this? Think twice Mr. Mozaliak.

the cards do have another option, even better than Oswalt, the birds should trade for the top solid and conssistant pitcher, james shields from the rays, the cards would and could have a tough rotation, only IF they really wanted!!!!

March 22, 2012  11:41 AM ET

Oswalt should be the plan C, but the cards should act wisely when the need of a quality starter its in demand!!

March 22, 2012  11:43 AM ET

the rays have plenty good pitching arms, all what the cards have to do its,, trade some good prospects to the rays and the team's rotation should be secure for the whole season!!!
