06:33 AM ET 03.23 | Bobby Valentine was expected to spice up the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry and he hasn't disappointed. Thursday night, after calling for a suicide squeeze to forge a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Red Sox manager was dismayed the game was called because Yankees manager Joe Girardi said his team had no pitching left. "They had plenty of pitching," Valentine said. "Probably too long of a [bus] ride. They could have known that going in." Valentine said he was upset he got Clayton Mortensen up to pitch the 10th before he was told the game had been called. "I don't think that was very courteous," he said.

"The pitcher in question was Clayton Mortensen, a 26-year-old righthander with very little chance to make the Red Sox."
Not that it really matters, but the article was from the NY Daily News, not the Post.

It's only spring training Bobby. Save it for when it counts.

Oh good grief...
Bobby's just talking a little smack. I don't see anything wrong with wanting to spice up the rivalry. He did after all wanted to finish the game - counting or not. Let the double-A boys fight for the W. That's why they came to spring training.

For the record... Neither of these squads were their full "A" squads. Boston had already played another split-squad game earlier in the day. This was an opportunity for the underlings to get some playing time for a team they one day may play for. Nothing wrong with acting like you care.

The Red Sox started their A squad, got them their playing time, and the game was a low minor league game at that point.
Girardi was right. Three hour bus ride, shower, then split games today at one for Yankees.

Thanks for the quote.
Boston traded Marco Scutaro for the 26-year-old Clayton Mortensen. They have every intention of using him. Maybe not this spring, but possibly as a call-up after their current pitching situation settles down.

Kudos to the Red Sox for building that ball park. Very nice.
Glad they stopped the game, still some good basketball going on at the same time.

Shouldn't have been a tied game anyhow. The home plate ump missed a call and let Boston score a run. Replay showed the man was out.
