09:33 AM ET 03.23 | Commissioner Bud Selig and the Cardinals didn't exactly take the Puma to the woodshed this week, but they wasted little time calling him on the carpet. Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman concluded two days of explanations Thursday by apologizing to Selig for an earlier allegation that Major League Baseball "extorted" an agreement from new Houston Astros owner Jim Crane to move the franchise from the National League Central to the American League West next season.

I just lost a lot of respect for this guy. When you make a controversial statement that is patently true, stick to it.

Translation:
I would prefer not to be fined by the head cheese.

So what if it was true? It is no longer Berkman's problem and they will hardly be missed. Although it will muck up the AL West a bit. lol

I think Astro fans in general are upset with the deal, and Berkman, a Houston native, and an ex-Astro, is speaking out more like a fan than a player.

I had no problem with the Selig requiring Houston move to the AL in order to allow the sale of the team. I know this is kind of a pain in the neck for Houston but it was a realignment plan that made the most sense because it disturbed the fewest teams and will more result in a cost savings for the league with regard to travel. It would be great also from the standpoint of setting up a rivalry with Texas' other team...the Rangers.

Should have been the Brewers. Same over-crowded NL Central division, and traditionally an AL team.

No, Milwaukee is traditionally an NL city.(1953-65), and the Brewers presently have considerably more clout than the Astros. You don't just up and move a 96 win division winning team. The Astros were the easy choice by far

i agree with you, the astros was the logical team to be transfer to the american league, plus they play in the closers area as the rangers!!!

Berkman spoke the truth / something Selig has always been alergic to / biggest putz since Kuhn.

.....houston should be glad for the opp to join the big leagues......will get their clock cleaned for a few years, which will produce great amusement within the great state, but after they get back on their feet, may become a first class rivalry......

Bigger. But in all fairness Selig never was a commissioner, just the water boy.

Exactly. This is just further proof that former PA Governor Ed Rendell was spot on when he pontificated about the 'wussification' of America.

Funny, considering they leaving the "Big" league that just won the last two WS, and at the expense of none other than you know who

The BIG leagues? Which League has won THREE of the last FOUR World Series? Are they hopping into the 'wayback' machine to go to a time when the AL was dominant? Please use your inner voice first, listen to it and if it makes the SLIGHTEST bit of sense to you then DON'T utter it........................btw how's that lock for the Cy Yu Darvish pitching?

.....darvish is just messing around.....he will be almost unhittable when his cy young campaign begins in earrnest.....btw the sox and booby v really messed up not getting this guy in exchange for the guy at 1b who enjoyed his career year......dont think the rangers will do it anymore....ag may take a step back from last year when he was a new bat in the league...will likely hit 30 points lower.....rays and jays will battle it out over there anyways....

QUOTE(#16):

But its NOT true, extortion means you're EXTRACTING money from someone, the ower GOT what 70M to move???

The extortion involved: Either swallow our terms {move} or we nix the deal. The cash thown in to cushion the obvious financial blow involved in changing leagues. Didn't Selig start this imbalance years ago by weaseling his AL Brewers into the NL?
