08:29 AM ET 03.26 | It ain't easy being Brandon Dubinsky these days. If benching [Dubinsky] once turns into benching Dubinsky twice turns into benching Dubinsky three times, isn't it safe to suggest John Tortorella's tough-love tactic, which is unique in the coach's approach to the Rangers' core players, isn't having the desired effect and might not be the best way to get the best out of the 25-year-old Alaskan? ... But while Dubinsky was hardly the only Ranger to commit an egregious defensive error or make a foolhardy decision in the underwhelming contest from which the Blueshirts emerged with a 4-3 shootout victory, he was the only player of whom Tortorella chose to make an example.

The cracks are starting to show. He let Stepan HAVE. IT. the other night. It's a pretty simple way to get your team to stop responding. 2nd round is my guess, especially if the Pens overtake them.

they were bound to "slow down" a bit, they have played at a pretty high level for most of the season

And I think Torts reaction may take a slight slump and turn it into a major problem.

I would have benched Dubinsky for wearing a mustache like that one in the pic

And they're not the only team to "slow down". But I haven't seen Mike Babcock reaming out his boys, or Paul Maclean. It's just a little much.

March 26, 2012  09:38 AM ET

i think he scored a tough battle winning goal in front of the net after the benching so i'd venture to guess it may have worked. dubinsky has a brain fart once in a while and torts lets him know about. the guy has repeatedly been in his doghouse and the only way out is to play smart hockey consistently which he hasn't done. he's still young and can work his way out, i think tortorella gives him every chance he can, when he is playing well, he plays him with top guys...and lets cool it on the cracks showing, no team in the league can play at that level for 82 straight, they are still 1st in the east and tied for the presidents trophy right now...i think we can all agree the penguins are on a ridiculous tear right now that will also be hard to sustain and if they do, it will be hard for any team to beat them, not just the rangers

i also love when people start criticizing tortorella now that the rangers have slowed a bit. his coaching style was just fine all season, but now its not good cuz they've lost a few. he is not mike babcock, who has a veteran laden team that is on a endless string of playoff appearances and for the most part police themselves and know how to handle a playoff drive and all that comes with it. the rangers are a very young team for all intents and purposes and i believe they need an iron fist when it comes to playing the style of hockey that makes them successful. remember tom renney, he was a laid back coach in NY, and do you remember how that turned out?

Iron fists are an easy way to get a team to quit fast on you these days. Players are different, they are brought through the system differently than the guys who played for tough junior coaches back in the day and were cool with hot heads as pro coaches. Berate a young team too much, they're going to cost you your job, and if Torts can't get past the 2nd round, I don't see how he sticks around NY.

As a Devil fan I have seen this script way to many times, but it is the GM there doing it instead of the coach . Drive the players so hard during the regular season, if the team isn't special they will flame out real fast. They will find out in a few weeks if the Rags are special or not.

I wonder if Tortorella shouldn't dial it back a bit and let veterans like Richards handle some of the motivational duties. That is one of the reasons they got him isn't it?

I can't believe I missed the New Rochelle address. And, I know of e.e.'s fondness for lower case. The Leafs do suck but not as much as Mondays.
