08:11 AM ET 03.26 | There were likely many factors that pushed John Elway in the direction of chasing Peyton Manning, but faith in him returning to MVP form probably had a lot to do with it. In one of their meetings, [Elway] bluntly asked if Manning would be able to return to the type of quarterback that made him a four-time NFL MVP. "There is no doubt in my mind," Manning replied. With that, Elway was sold, and he, head coach John Fox and general manager Brian Xanders moved ahead with the franchise's biggest offseason move since Elway arrived in Denver nearly 30 years ago. "It is tremendous," Elway said. "The way I look at my life, all that other stuff happened as a player."

Despite the circus in New Jersey, once the season starts Denver will be the show to watch. Any bets they start in Prime Time?

What's Manning going to say? "Yes, I have serious doubts about my play-making abilities. I'm a lot older, I've been seriously injured and haven't played for a year. One heavy shot to my neck and I'm gone again." Yes, that would have gotten a contract.

And Elway is seeing what he wants to see in Manning. It is the same thing that all owners and general managers see when they take a risk on an aging or injured player. It's basically the hope that the player can still be great or regain his former level of performance. It's not always a smart move.
