Why Cain is a bigger deal than Bonds

08:16 AM ET 03.27 | The clock is ticking for Matt Cain, whose potential free agency is a very big deal in the Bay Area. [When] you really think about it, and frame it against the run of recent Giants history, the Cain situation is even bigger than all that. * Here's his true status: Cain looms as the Giants' most important re-signing case in years ... possibly since Barry Bonds after the 2001 season and maybe longer than that. Because Cain's a homegrown player who won a World Series, I think it's larger than Bonds, who came in as a free agent and was re-signed on his second Giants deal. I think Cain's pending situation is the franchise's most significant since Will Clark signed a four-year, $15M extension before the 1990 season. So that's 22 years.

If he's that important, maybe the team should sign him.

I'd be interested to see a list of potential free agents who play out their last year without an extension and end up staying with that club.
My guess is it's not very long.

You better start working on compiling that list.

There were other good hitters out there when the Giants didn't re-sign Mr. Bonds (not that the Giants actually signed any of them), but there just ain't many top o' the staff #1 pitchers out there in free agency in ANY year. Sign 'em, SF ... or slip back into obscurity.

They can do that even if they sign him.

Can you imagine the sniveling Roy will do if Cain signs with another team?

Alright.
Hey! What do you know. In the history of free agency, there have been 152 players that meet that criteria!

I look forward to it with great anticipation.

Particularly when Lincecum does the same thing the following year.

Yeah - and the freak has made it pretty clear he's going to test the market when he has the chance.

So is Cain.
Players don't cut off negotiations and play their last season into free agency to resign. If they're going to take the risk, they're going to get paid.

I suppose there is the chance that Cain could sign with the Giants as a free agent, but obviously there will be other suitors in the game at that point.
From a risk/reward standpoint, it just doesn't make sense for Cain to play this season out and then not file for free agency.

Cain entered into the negotiations ready to make a deal. My guess is that douchehammer Sabean tried to lowball him.

He's a goner, as is Lincecum.

On one hand, I'm happy for the Giants fans for the 2010 championship. On the other hand, I'm sure it bought "douchehammer Sabean" some job security. Hopefully for your sake, that runs out sooner rather than later.

The problem with winning the World Series is it validated Brian Sabean's bad decisions. He will never admit that the Giants won in spite of him rather than because of him.
