Manuel's most difficult decision before Opening Day

08:15 AM ET 03.28 | Juan Pierre is in unfamiliar territory. [On Tuesday morning, he] was far from his locker in the Phillies clubhouse, seated in the part of the room where scores of empty lockers mark reminders of all the players who didn't make it. He twiddled with his phone and looked up a few times as two more players said their good-byes. He wore a red T-shirt with the words "Beast Mode" on it, and the "t" is designed to resemble a cross. Yes, this is unfamiliar territory for a veteran of 12 years and 1,751 games, but he has faith. ... The Phillies must make a decision on Pierre by Friday. Charlie Manuel admitted it might be the most difficult one he faces in the final week before the 2012 season begins.

Good to see from the comments section that no one cares.

It is an odd choice of article. Pierre, by all accounts, a nice guy and at times during his career has been a fine player. But what's the point here?

It's not like Pierre hasn't been around the block and back a few times either.

pierre could be going back to the dodgers who knows the dodgers could give him a utility job in the roster!!

Aside from the Pitching, the Phil's are a Mess.

I mean they've got Ty Wigginton penciled in until Howard comes back... Hello!

OF is Mayberry, Victorino and Pence.

With D. Brown sent down, the last 2 spots are gonna between Nix, Podsednik and Juan...

Unless I missed someone...

You forgot about Utley, no one knows when he's coming back. Polanco is iffy, injury wise, over at 3rd. They're playing with duct tape and pryers for the next 2 months.

Nix is certainly not fighting for a spot on the bench. He will most likely platoon with JMJ. The last spot is between Pierre and Podsednik.

Pierre makes it, at least to start the season, even though Podsednik outplayed him. Pierre's contract says he has to be released if he's not on the major league roster on April 1st. I believe Podsednik's has the same escape clause, except his is June 1st. So, they'll keep Pierre, send Podsednik down, and if Pierre isn't cutting it, they'll cut him by May 15th and bring up Podsednik Makes sense to keep both of them around, in case one gets injured. But really, we're doing stories on 5th outfielders now. Slow day...

manuel is a bumbling moron.... the SILLIES will be sitting watching the world series AGAIN this year, just like last year after spending all those $$$$$$$$$$$ ..... manuel is the reason!

LF is gonna play a big factor in the Phillies season with Utley and Howard on the Mend...Not to mention 2nd and 3rd base are injury prone. So with all of the OF acquisitions i think the phillies are looking for stability in the OF more so then they have in the past due to how explosive the Infield was offensively over the years...

This team is gonna have a lot of work to do offensively and Juan Pierre (we will need guys to play small ball as opposed to try and hit HRs which the phillies havent been doing for several years now) is one of the best in teh game at playing small ball...even at the end of his career he is better at that then any of the big names on the phillies' roster
