Has Pat Summitt coached her last game?

08:20 AM ET 03.28 | The women's Final Four is set with a quartet of top seeds, and, this year, Tennessee is not among them. Right up front, let's be clear on one thing: This is Pat Summitt's call. After 38 years, 1,098 victories and countless lives touched, she has earned that privilege. But it's time. As much as we all admire Summitt for her accomplishments, for what she has meant to her university and her sport, and most of all for her grace in dealing with such a horrible disease, the time has come to step away. One season of dealing with the diagnosis of early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type, under such a microscope was courageous. Another season would be a tragedy.

It's not the rag's call to make.

True dat. Pat (and the AD) need to look at what's best for her.

Maybe retirement is not quite yet necessary nor warranted, or possibly some kind of Asst AD or Special Advisor position would let her continue to contribute (if she wants to), have a chance to spend more time on her health/treatment if needed, and transition for a year or so.

her staff accepted the role this season to take on some additional duties. If they are on ship to do the same next season, there is no reason she can't go another round.

It won't. Dave Hart should have more class than that (or fear).

Yes. It's possible.

Pat's got too many good & loving people around her. They'll help her see the situation clearly. She'll make the call to step aside when she knows it's right. Whenever she does, Holly Warlick will carry the weight, giving Tennessee the time to consider the path forward (which may be Holly taking the reigns as HC).

Never happen in Summit Country. The VOLS AD knows what side his bread is buttered.

You should not mention Bobby Bowden's name in the same sentence as Pat Summitt. She is everything Bobby Bowden was not. She is one of the finest ladies to every grace the game. Integrity, dignity and class. Bobby Bowden cannot even spell those words.

The only reason Bowden was hated was because his teams kicked everyone arse back in the day and he acted it. Other than that he wasn't that bad.

Talk about filling a legends shoes though...Pat will be leaving some huge ones.

It was tough seeing Pat being so different this year. I think it would be a good move to bring Tyler Summitt onto the women's coaching staff whether his mom stays or goes. I would like to see him inherit that job someday.

She said that she doesn't want to keep coaching if it hurts the program. The uncertainty about her future is making recruiting hard, not to mention the fact that she is the best recruiter currently associated with the program.
I agree with TNEagle-- it was hard seeing her sitting at side court this season looking somewhat listless at times when Pat Summit at 100% would have been causing her players to snap out of their funk with her patented "glare".
I would guess that Holly Warlick will officially be head coach next season, with Pat Summit getting some associated job like "coach emeritus" or something like that-- she could still help a lot with recruiting, I think. I also think stealing Nikki Caldwell back would be a decent move if Coach Summit steps down. (LSU deserves it.)
