08:17 AM ET 03.29 | The Dodgers' purchase, from the dollar signs to the big names, raised eyebrows in front offices across the baseball landscape on Wednesday. The Dodgers are one of baseball's premier franchises and you can bet that [Magic Johnson], [Stan Kasten] and their deep-pocketed partners will be looking to bring the club to the top of the National League in a hurry. You can also bet they will look to make a splashy talent acquisition to lead that rise, possibly a pitcher with Southern California roots, a great changeup and a World Series MVP trophy. Of course, we're talking about Cole Hamels. ... It is not difficult to envision Hamels pitching in Chavez Ravine wearing one of those brilliant white Dodgers' uniforms.

Phillies and Hamels are close to extension according to Jim Salisbury, the beat writer for Phils.

The amount of money per year was agreed to, the number of years are being negotiated.

Go Dodgers!!

March 29, 2012  09:32 AM ET

even if they can only get those two it would make possibly the best 1-2 punch in baseball. its to bad all of this didnt get done before the big free agents signed, either fielder or pujols would be a dodger right now if it had been settled 4 months ago.

Philly papers are trash. Trust me, I have to read them every day... sigh.

March 29, 2012  09:59 AM ET

I exxpect the Dodgers to be very active in the 2012-13 offseason. As for this year, it is what it is.

March 29, 2012  10:07 AM ET

I'd be surprised if Philly let him go. They spend money on pitching like it's going out of style.

Free Agents Never Are, Bros.

One thing I've learned not do is count my chickens before they're hatched, after it was assumed that the Yankees would offer enough to outbid everybody and sign Cliff Lee and we got zip zero nada. Hamels would be a great addition to any club, Cain too for that matter.
LA could be making headlines next off season but for your own sanity you've got to be patient.

Some reports out of LA are saying that the $2 b price tag means higher fees (parking, beer) and something of an austerity program for a bit. When you over-pay by a cool billion, something has got to give. Place CRavine def. needs a spruce up!

I am excited about the new owership group in LA.

Hopefully, the first thing they do is fire Colletti.

I wonder if McCourt will be providing security in his parking lot?

I couldn't believe they are getting $2b for this mess. If they are worth $2b, the yanks must be worth $6b.

Agreed................hell look what we threw at Joe Blanton for cryin' out loud!

Blanton must have some dirt on the GM that he is hanging over his head.

I hope the Dodgers do this, I don't mind it when they can contend for the NL West...it doesn't bother me in the slightest

March 29, 2012  11:11 AM ET

Will the Dodgers become the Yankees (and spend, spend, spend) of the West Coact?
