Dodgers' buy threatens Giants, maybe Cain?

08:19 AM ET 03.29 | There may be a new price tag for keeping up with the Joneses in the NL West. Since the late '90s, the Giants always seemed to set their payroll just high enough to give them hope to contend into September. From there, they either went on a playoff run or faded. ... If the Giants' philosophy remains intact, their payroll needs to skyrocket. The Dodgers' payroll is $90 million, and it's not sticking there long. It could soar beyond the Giants' $130 million faster than a Magic Johnson no-look pass or Stan Kasten wink to Matt Cain. Finishing 11 1/2 games from first place (as L.A. did last year) is fine for a scoundrel such as Frank McCourt, but it won't do for a group dropping $2.15 billion to set up shop at Chavez Ravine.

The Dodgers? Here's what has to happen:
1. They win. Not likely this season.
2. They draw back the fans. After parking lot beatings and Albert Pujols going to Anaheim, that's not likely either.
By the way, what is "Great & amp"?

It would be a big mistake for the giants to not lock down cain before the season.
