08:06 AM ET 03.30 | With Peyton Manning off the board, San Francisco locked up 2011 starter Alex Smith. [The] Niners apparently have a drama developing at the backup spot. Team insiders report that a "wide-open" competition is "absolutely" brewing between Colin Kaepernick, the team's second-round pick in last year's draft, and recent free-agent pickup Josh Johnson, who previously excelled under Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego. "And don't forget about (2011 undrafted free agent) Scott Tolzien," one insider told PFW. "He's very bright and accurate and could also be in the mix. Harbaugh loves lots of competition at every position, and he's got it at quarterback."

Wait, wait, wait...... competition for the backup spot? What about the starting spot? THis is not what people call competition, it is a diversion. Wouldn't want to put any pressure on Alex Smith. Remember Smith was the one who said when asked about the 49ers looking at Manning; I think it would be great if they hired Manning as long as I (Alex Smith) get to compete with him for the starting job. I think Smith signed his contract with a promise from the 49ers that he would be guaranteed the starting job, at least in 2012. My bet that when the season starts it will be Smith, Kaepernick, and in the 3rd spot Johnson or Tolzien. I have never seen Johnson play, so I have my doubts.

There's no competition there Niner's fans. Smith will be your guy.

Could be a strategy to hype one of the back-ups for a future trade. Just as guess, I would predict that Johnson gets a lot of work during pre-season, the coaches talk him up as the greatest thing since sliced bread, and then he gets traded for a couple of good draft picks.

49ers in the drivers seat...Harbaugh has the game-plan & the players...It's the Niners again dominating the West...

Now this is news!!!! NOT

I think we should have a reality show with back-up QB's. Maybe they could live in a house together, or date the same girl. They sure seem to get a lot of press these days- more than the starting QB's.

Would you rather watch Tebow date some girl, or Matt Hasselbeck? Guess I answered that question...
(sorry Matt)
