Payton worried about an assistant swiping his job?

08:02 AM ET 04.02 | There may be competing agendas in New Orleans, where the mere idea of Bill Parcells swooping in for Sean Payton has reportedly ruffled the feathers of current Saints who might be considered for the interim job, but Payton may have other ideas. The prevailing theory in league circles continues to be that Payton wants an outsider like Parcells because Parcells wouldn't want to stay beyond 2012, and Payton already has publicly declared that he'll be back in 2013. If an in-house interim head coach enjoys a high level of success in 2012, owner Tom Benson may decide to make a change. If the Saints win the Super Bowl at the Superdome, Benson may have no other choice but to promote the interim coach into Payton's job.

Vitt or Spags? Payton doesn't have too much to worry about.

They're losing their head coach for at least one season. Their defensive coordinator is gone, replaced by a new guy. Spags is a good coordinator, but I think it takes time to get people up to speed. Additionally, some of those defensive players will be sitting some time out. Too many distractions this year. I would be surprised if they make it to the playoffs.

Have they announced the suspensions for defensive players yet? They could very well be starting 2nd-stringers for all or part of the year, depending on how that goes.

There has to be a reason he doesn't trust his assistants... This makes sense.

Bingo... there has to be a reason why he would want to bring some outsider to replace him.

It is how humans react. No matter what they may say. And the only way you can have an ego like an NFL coach must have, it comes with insecurities. You cannot separate the two.
