Cano holding up Kinsler's payday

08:14 AM ET 04.04 | The Rangers are reportedly discussing a six-year contract with Ian Kinsler that would begin in 2013. The Rangers, sources say, are willing to give Kinsler a salary higher than Dan Uggla's record average for a second baseman, $12.4 million. But the team probably does not want to go far above that figure, which is where [Robinson Cano] enters the equation. The Yankees exercised Cano's $14 million option for this season and hold a $15 million option on him for 2013. His next deal, whether achieved in an extension or through free agency, figures to be at a much higher number. Kinsler, who turns 30 on June 22, is signed for $7 million this season with a $10 million club option for 2013.

Sorry but the way he steals bases and his range on the field put him in the same class as Cano.... might not hit for anything better than .260 but ill take 30-30 and 1 1/2 of the best double play tandem in the league....

Cano is a better fielder and hitter than Kinsler. Not that Kinsler isn't a great player to have on your team but Robby is the man at 2nd base.

I would say he's an important piece if he was playing for the Padres or the Mariners, but not the Rangers whose lineup is deep 1 through 9.

Right. Because a leadoff hitter with a .355 OBP, 29 stolen bases and 117 runs is very replaceable. Don't pay him, dump him, and get Rafael Furcal in there. Nobody will know the difference. He hasn't had 29 stolen bases or a hundred runs since 2006, but that's no biggie.

that is what i was thinking, but it wouldn't be the first player to get overpaid. Maybe Cano should wait for Kinsl;er to get 20 mill...then his price would go up.

And as Atro mentioned - Kinsler brings a lot to the table that isn't replacable. Add to that he is in the prime of his career...

Teams are going to work on keeping their valued players. The Votto signing changed the price of doing business...
I wonder how much of this has to do with the new ownership group in LA...

seveal teams have new revenue streams, MLB is working on national revenue streams. Teams will find it harder and harder to claim poverty. These players are making money hand over fist, so are the owners.
