08:11 AM ET 04.06 | Forgive Cubs fans for wondering if Opening Day was really Game 163 of 2011. Cubs players seem tired of the perception that failure is institutionalized in the organization, or that Thursday's blown game was symbolic of the last century. After giving up a run on a double and softly hit single in the ninth, Carlos Marmol was perturbed when he was asked if it felt like "deja vu" to him. "Last year is over," he said. "It's a new year. You see a lot of new (players) here, huh? That's what it is. Last year is over. Next question." Matt Garza then cranked up Bob Marley on the clubhouse stereo, reacting to the media horde surrounding Kerry Wood's locker. Usually music is not played after a loss.

Terrible base running with two runners already in scoring position and less than two outs thrown out. Bad fielding. The bullpen gives up the lead and in the next inning, the game. Meet the new Cubbies, same as the old Cubbies except with less power, and their best reliever, Sean Marshall, traded away for flotsam. How many more times is Soriano going to fool the Cubbies into putting him in their starting lineup?

Somehow you get a sense that things won't turn for the better until he is no longer a Cub.

Epstein went into a disaster area and it will take some time to disinfect the place of the rot that was there. It will take a couple or more seasons to rebuild the team and its farm system. That stench in Wrigley is just what's been left over from the past few seasons. Whether Theo and Dale are successful, of course, remains to be seen.

They'll probably trade Marlon Byrd once the season progresses a bit, I'd imagine. No one will take Soriano.

Hate for Sean Marshall? Surely there's someone more deserving. Dude's got a hell of a curve.

1908. By the way, Cubs fans, yesterday's truck had DC plates. The Nats can't hit.

Some of that is true. However, Sveum has already shown he is too aggressive and doesn't think situations through well enough to be the manager. Being aggressive is good, except when you're stupid. Then it's just suicide. "If I only had a brain."

How long until Cubs fans realize Epstein was hired to boost the Ricketts family return on investment, not build a winning ball club?
