Suspended Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who was sentenced to 23 months in federal prison for his guilty plea on charges related to dogfighting, plans to enter a drug treatment program that could reduce his time behind bars. Vick, who failed a drug test while awaiting sentencing in the dogfighting case, is eligible for a federal drug treatment program known as the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). Inmates are involved in intensive treatment that lasts six to 12 months, with a minimum of 500 hours of treatment. Upon completion of the program, the inmate's eligibility for early release based on previous criminal convictions is determined. Vick did not have any previous convictions before his dogfighting case.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel that you should only be able to take advantage of these programs to get out early if you actually qualify for them. I mean, testing positive for pot doesn't mean that you need drug treatment. It simply means that they are giving him an opt out of X amount of time. It's not as though he had a problem with coke, or crack, or had needle marks up and down his arms. This guy simply made bad decisions. He needs education and to serve his time. Not 'treatment' and be let out early.

you said it perfectly, Wrigley

January 8, 2008  07:38 AM ET

Couldn't agree more!!!!!!!!

January 8, 2008  07:41 AM ET

Exactly right Wrigley! Let him serve his time for the crime he commited. If he still needs "help" to kick pot, let him enter counseling after. He's in jail so that should keep him off pot for the duration.

Give us all a break. He, or any inmate, would sign up for belly dancing if it reduced their sentence..

January 8, 2008  08:02 AM ET

didn't he also report early so he could reduce his sentence? I think michael clearly understands one thing. the eariler he gets out, the better chance that his body will be able to get in football shape. I hope no one signs this guy and he ends up slinging burgers for a living.

Vick is still working the system.

January 8, 2008  08:22 AM ET

I love it!!! Let this man out of jail, since he never really belonged there in the first place... Freakin dog fighting.... Give me a break. Go lock up Bush if you want a real criminal...

Obama in 08' baby... Can wait to see the faces when Obama gets in office and Vick in on the field!!! lol... I love it!!!!!!!

Vick is playing the system like the system played him. You have all these other celebs who drive drunk, use cocaine, and beat their wives, and they go to jail for a weekend. This was his first offense and he shouldn't have gotten 23 months. If Vick is smart enough to somehow work the system to get out earlier I say good for him.

January 8, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Agreed ^

January 8, 2008  09:02 AM ET

What do you people want the man is in prison for dogs people are out free for killing humans don't you people see anything wrong with that

January 8, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Both Wrigley and jj730 are right. If Vick got 23 months for dogfighting, what should Leonard Little have gotten for DUI MANSLAUGHTER?! HE (Little) freakin' killed somebody! And it wasn't his first DUI offense, either. Now, I don't know if he spent a "weekend" in jail, but I know for a fact he didn't spend 23 months. And he's STILL PLAYING!

I've always found it amazingly and sadly interesting that people try to compare apples to oranges and somehow attempt to justify one's conduct to that of another when it comes wrongfulness. Now admittedly, I don't know the details of the Leonard Little DUI - Manslaughter case which I suspect is still going on in the system. That means final resolve hasn't been reached so how on earth does anybody try to come and unfinished and unsentenced case to one that is finalized is beyond me. Now I've seen others comment that Michael Vick is playing the system and he may be. But does he or his attorney realize they are completely destroying this once great athlete's image? Why don't they just shut up, do his time and let him pick up the pieces and start anew!

Leonard Little made the same mistake twice. He was arrested again for driving drunk after he killed that lady. Leonard Little went to jail for 30 days I believe for manslaughter. And you have to compare "apples to oranges" if you look a the legal system. Why does one man get hit with the book when others do not? Prosecutors even said that most first time offenders would only get probhition or a short term jail sentence for the exact same offence. Because this man played football and was a role model he should get a longer sentence? How is that fair?

Bush should be in jail? Bush is a real criminal? O'bama will magically solve everything because he is mixed race?

If your not in the MILITARY then what do you really care about us getting deployed. I don't want 911 to happen again. If you want to be friends with terrorists and think that they wont strike again........you are in for a rude awakening.

That is the most retarded comment ever........One question.....Why do Black people hate George Bush? Because Kanye West said so? What is the real reason?

January 8, 2008  09:34 AM ET

And let the Vick argument start again.... this is ridiculous!

As for the news up there, well maybe he can get out early, but the NFL needs to impose an extra penalty (once he is ready to come back) for the substance abuse problem.

If he is playing the system, he shouldn't be able to play the NFL.

Hate needs no reason. Even though I disagree with some of what you said.
