Vikings going with Kalil, then a receiver?

08:00 AM ET 04.10 | The top of the draft always tempts a fan base with available skill-position players. If Justin Blackmon or Michael Floyd were bonafide No. 1 options, on par with Larry Fitzgerald or Andre Johnson, taking one of them with the third overall pick would be easy. At least based on most accounts from draft analysts and scouting reports, however, USC left tackle Matt Kalil is more of a sure bet at his position than any receiver in the draft. The thought of taking Kalil just goes down smoother, like buying a Volvo that feels safe driving off the lot. But as far as needs? Boy, do the Vikings need receiver help. ... That's why as the draft process has unfolded, taking a receiver at No. 35 overall is a good play because of the depth at the position.

Why not draft Kalil, make him a receiver! Best of both worlds. Spielman probably has thought that.

The problem with Volvo drivers is they feel too safe, indestructible, and because of this they are reckless drivers, they ( the soccer mom in her Volvo station wagon ) drive with wild abandonment knowing that if they get in an accident it will be the other person and their family that will be subject to physical harm.

I don't really care about the Vikes; they're pretty much stat fodder for the rest of the NFC North at this point, although Lovie and the Bears are really trying to take that title pulling Hester from return duties, and signing Marshall.

I guess the Pioneer press is impressed with the Viking defense, no need to take a defensive player with that second round pick?

Take Kalil, it's a no brainer (perfect for the Vikings). Being from USC, he will be happy when they move to LA.

Brother and father played OL in the NFL- those genes don't come along every draft. You'd be foolish to let him pass by.

If it makes perfect sense, and forms a perfect fit, the Vike's won't do it. Their history in the draft (not counting Randy Moss) sucks.

I still maintain that someone on the T&R staff owes many, MANY favors to someone associated with the Pioneer Press...

Yep ... and when next January rolls around and the Vikes shake their heads at another losing season, they'll look at Kalil and say, "Okay, so at least we didn't choke as bad as Washington (or Cleveland) did."
