Cubs woes guaranteed for years?

08:11 AM ET 04.10 | There may be worse news for Cubs fans who have already seen the struggles of Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol to open the season. The team is years away from contention. Savvy fans probably knew that already, but both the amateur draft and free-agent market are becoming more difficult for high-revenue teams to exploit, complicating the Cubs' rebuilding efforts. The new restrictions on draft spending, combined with the smaller number of stars reaching free agency, amount to a double whammy for Theo Epstein and his new front office. ... Scout well, spend big on the draft -- that was Epstein's plan with the Cubs. Only now, it's not going to happen.

Theo is smart, and he has a strong set of back-up executives. Sooner or later he will figure it out. The formula is never the same from year-to-year, and the smart CEOs figure that out.

Nice to know some things never change.

Baseball is a copycat management sport, as are most sports.

Epstein went from a genius to an idiot????? Go figure................

epstein, will lay low, there are times when you could be a top of the level, but there are times when you have to wait and just built your stamina, your energy, so when the right time comes there shouldn't be any excuse!!!

Yeah they're guaranteed to suck for hundreds of years. So what about it?

April 10, 2012  01:53 PM ET

.....this stuff did not change overnight....cubs had as much notice as the next team to get the plan in place....they should implode that cesspool of a stadium and rebuild in north riverside....

Anyone who was expecting the Cubs to contend in the new few years were and are blind to the reality.

Theo knew what kind of a mess he was getting into, and he knew what kind of a mess he was leaving behind.

Not exactly a news flash.

The best chance for long suffering fans to see the Cubbies win a World Championship before they die is for someone to invent a time machine.
