Gruff Howland gets giddy

08:19 AM ET 04.12 | Ben Howland, not surprisingly, is a happy man today. [On Wednesday, Howland] laughed so often and seemed so much at ease that you almost wanted to demand he answer some obscure trivia question about his background to prove it was really he. The typically gruff UCLA basketball coach was in such good cheer during a conference call with reporters Wednesday night because the Bruins had just signed Shabazz Muhammad, ending a three-year recruitment of one of the top prep seniors in the nation. "Needless to say," Howland said, "I'm very happy right now." Less than a month after another season ended without an NCAA tournament appearance and Howland's job status seemed shakier than the San Andreas fault, the longtime coach was back on solid footing.

Nah, they actually have to EARN it in hoops...via a playoff instead of votes like a Beauty Contest!

I guess the guy who was running a program that was totally out of control is going to continue running a program out of control with a blue chip recruit.

Cause we still have a team that will beat them.

Yes we do. But they arent blue. They are red. And they are to your North.

Our year now.

Cal going nowhere without a PG and a scorer. Bennet cant hold Davis' jockstrap.

Wanted to also say.......is it strange to anyone else how quickly an embattled/gruff coach can jump right up off the hot seat just because a couple teenagers signed a piece of paper to play at your school?

These kids have all these guys by the nuts.....coaches, agents, fans, administrators, EVERYONE. Even the media is all of a sudden saying (taken straight from above) "the longtime coach was back on solid footing." Guess at UCLA you dont have to actually win games?
