Ovi too focused on hitting to score

08:20 AM ET 04.13 | For a third-liner, Alex Ovechkin had a pretty good night. [Ovechkin] dished out a game-high seven hits in Thursday's 1-0 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins. But the Washington Capitals' captain did not have much success creating what his team needed most from him: scoring opportunities. Ovechkin attempted only two shots all game; the first was blocked and the other was stopped by Bruins goalie Tim Thomas. ... Two factors, it seemed, contributed to Ovechkin's lack of chances: Bruins Coach Claude Julien got the matchups he wanted and Ovechkin, at times, seemed more interested in exchanging big hits with Boston defensemen Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg than scoring.

The Bruins did an excellent job of bottling up the ALL the Caps all night. Worked to perfection since it prevented the Caps from getting any kind of good scoring opportunities.
Caps must come up with a new strategy if they hope to survive more than 4 games in this series. OK, does Hunter have the brains to do so?

It's an odd tact to take against the Bruins, who have a lot of big hitters on the team. Washington is better off trying to open up the game and hoping they can outscore the B's.
B's won the hit battle, 40-29 last night. Games like this are going to wear out Washington.

This game may not have even made it to OT if it weren't for the performance of Holtby.

On the little bit we got to watch in the intermissions + OT up here (why in God's name did CBC get this one?! Why not give it to TSN and let them put it on the deuce?!), Holtby was phenomenal. For Wash's sake, I hope it wasn't a one-off.

I'll take the hitting over scoring any day from the Caps, although the B's need to start scoring on the power plays. I felt bad for Marchand; that puck just wouldn't sit still for him. And what a good game by Holtby. If he continues playing like that the Caps may have found their goalie!

Washington seems to do this in the playoffs with some frequency. They seem to find a young goalie that is very tough, for at least the 1st round:
Jim Carey
Varlamov
Neuvirth
now Holtby
Here's hoping for the kid's sake he isn't the next in the line og these guys. I don't think any of them were/are all the good long term. The jury is still out on Neuvirth, but I've seen nothing special

I saw a lot of the game and I agree. Holtby was the only reason the Caps were in that game. I liked the way some of the players, including Ovie came out and talked to the kid. Hope the Caps go far so Wilkes-Barre doesn't have to face him in the playoffs.
Ovie laid the smack down on Chara in the corner that one time.

Maybe he's trying to get the rest of those guys to follow suit?

The B's waited til the Finals to score on the PP last year. Maybe made the road a little tougher for themselves but they still got to their destination.

He has never been afraid to be a physical player. That is what makes him such a great player is he can inspire teammates in different ways. It can be a long series and hits can take their toll. But then again, they are not paying him 8 mil to hit.

I must say as much as I ripped on VS, now NHLSN, I got to watch three different games at one time last night, well done.
As Danny said though, Bruins got the matchups they wanted, home ice. Will be interesting to see how this series goes when Hunter can get Ovi away from the Chara pairing.

I see the B's splitting up Chara and Seidenburg in Washington, just to irritate Ovechkin.
He was so preoccupied with hitting those 2, keep that ball rollin'!

Maybe he's too focused on hitting the buffet? Perhaps he spent too much time around ole Brucie?
Or maybe he "cursed" himself with that "Ovechtrick" commercial? LOL
