Heat not looking to trade Shaq

Injured Heat center Shaquille O'Neal left the team Monday and headed for another NBA city to be treated -- not traded. That was the message Heat coach Pat Riley emphatically tried to deliver after Monday's practice at Target Center, where the Heat plays the Timberwolves on Tuesday night. The combination of O'Neal's declining production and the remaining two seasons and $40 million left on his contract have led to speculation that the Heat might consider rebuilding by unloading O'Neal in a trade. Riley defended O'Neal's production Monday and suggested contending teams would value a center with those numbers. But then Riley repeatedly said O'Neal wasn't on the trading block.

Yeah he has decent numbers... but dumping $40 million worth of cap space for the next 2 years sure could help them find some players to re-build in a hurry.

lakers become a contender and get rid of a bad contract in radmanovic
oneal and bynum and turiaf and odem aint a bad front court
( kobe is on record as saying he never wanted the team to trade shaq)

heat get a reasoabble shooter with a bad contract and 2 expiring contracts giving them cap room to be a major player in free agency next year to help wade as well a lottery pick this year for sucking

January 8, 2008  09:32 AM ET

The Heat won't trade Shaq because who's going to want him? If his contract was expiring, I can see someone taking him but with 2 or 3 years left who would commit team suicide like that?

January 8, 2008  09:47 AM ET

winkstrap I think the last place Shaq would go is LA. After getting spurned like he did he would probably just retire rather than get traded back to his old team. Too many bridges were burned for that to work out.

Of course you managed to give us the obligatory Lakers trade to turn them into champions post, so hopefully we wont see any more of them on this thread.

January 8, 2008  09:55 AM ET

I feel you Lucked out Dude, but nobody wants a De Soto....

January 8, 2008  10:00 AM ET

the lakers are a bunch of duds

i actually think that deal helps the heat a s-load more as a free agent next year is better than 20 million to shaq( the lakers would need to make a public apology to shaq and turn it in to a positive)

January 8, 2008  10:02 AM ET

I think trading him to Dallas may help bring some type of physical presence that Dallas has been laking for a long time.

How bout Shaq for Devin Harris, Dampier, and Hassell? Dallas will get a low-post scorer which will help free up Dirk

Miami will at least get a guard who can take some pressure off of D-Wade

January 8, 2008  10:11 AM ET

no one would touch dampiers contract in a million years no wait a billion

dallas do have what it takes if they want him though

January 8, 2008  10:24 AM ET

I dont' want Shaq to come to Dallas. I see those dang Mavericks too much on my local news as it is.

January 8, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Actually this would be a Knick move. So let me propose one. Shaq for Stephon Marbury, Jerome James, and Quentin Richardson. Those three contracts should equal the thirty mill. of Shaq.

January 8, 2008  10:37 AM ET

If the Knicks could get rid of those three contracts in one move, Isiah might get an "atta boy" from me. I haven't had a reason to give him props lately.

January 8, 2008  10:41 AM ET

Shaq's time is over. He is washed up. Miami will never get what they want in return for Shaq daddy.

January 8, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Romo: Are you serious? The Heat got a Larry O'Brien trophy, and that's a lot more than the Lakers have done since his trade.

January 8, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Great Hova!!
So now we'll have Curry, Zack and Shaq in the paint. Can we squeeze in Nate too, in there?

January 8, 2008  11:41 AM ET

Shaq to Cleveland for Ilgauskas, Hughes, and Snow????

January 8, 2008  11:41 AM ET

LOL

January 8, 2008  11:43 AM ET

You people can u read ....................... They say theren ot oging to trade Shaq and now ur making stupid trade things that you think will happen wtf.

January 8, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Picture this...as only Isiah will be able to pull this off:

Shag at 5
Curry at 4
Z-Bo at 3
Marbury at 2
Robinson at 1

Now who's going to stop that group, besides themselves???
