10:56 AM ET 04.15 | Keep an eye on the Boston Red Sox??? developing outfield situation. The Cubs are. Depending on how they view the prognosis of center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury???s shoulder injury, the Red Sox could turn to the Cubs, who have been willing to trade center fielder Marlon Byrd for months. That could open another avenue in the Cubs??? ongoing efforts to strengthen their bullpen. Although it might take a week or more before the Red Sox determine whether they???ll look outside for help, insiders suggest the Cubs??? front office, which maintains close ties to several Red Sox officials, is monitoring the situation.

Not sure that the Red Sox would give anything for Byrd who has been having problems at the plate this year. He's 34 years old, batting .071, and has zero extra-base hits so far. And that's with Rudy Jaramillo as his batting coach, whom the Cubbies claim is one of the best in baseball.

Would gladly give up Byrd...love his professionalism and hustle, but the Cubs are going through a youth movement and would like to give Brett Jackson a chance to show his skills along with the other youngsters...and Byrd won't end up the year hitting .071 and no extra base hits..he will end up hitting .275 with his fair share of hits...plus he's in the last year of his contract so the Sox would have no long term commitment

That would be so like the Cubbies to trade a player when he is struggling and his value is lowest. The Cubbies already rushed Castro along too fast and he is on his way to his third season with more than 26 errors. And Theo's youth movement has a long ways to go. On the Cubbies major league roster, Theo has 8 players 32 or older and 6 more 29 or 30. Their outfielders average over 34 years old.

that ship sailed long ago. Damon did not want to come back to Boston two summers ago I am pretty sure he hasnt changed his mind. His feelings were hurt by the booing or something like that. never realized he was so fragile.
I always liked Johnny and thought it was foolish when they Sox rushed him out the door, but like I said thats all so long ago that it only seems to matter to Damon.
Hes happy in Cleveland

There isn't anyone on the Cubs the Sox should want for outfielders. They are better off waiting for Crawford who is supposed to be just a few weeks away. I am sure the A's would make a deal. They always stockpile players to trade for draftpicks or minor leaguers

Your self loathing stupidity is reflected in just about every one of your statements. Byrd's value remains the same whether he is hitting .071 or .300 at this point. It is only 9 games into the season. He is already a known quantity in the league. Everyone already knows what they can expect from him throughout the course of a season. There are no surprises. Castro led the league in hits last year and was also a hitting machine the year before that. How is that rushing anything? His defense may be a work in progress, but it is well worth the growing pains to have his bat in the lineup everyday. But a monkeysAss certainly wouldn't know these things. It is sad how most of the moronic things you say can be picked apart with ease. Go back to molesting your cat.

The Cubs don't claim that... it's pretty well known around baseball

If Byrd is a known quantity, why couldn't the Cubbies unload him over the off-season. They certainly tried. Surely they aren't trying to corner the market in 32 or more year old outfielders? Could it be that teams think Byrd is way past his prime? Have his past stats benefited from playing in Wrigley?

As to Castro's defense being a work in progress, so was his concentration, Maybe they should have taught him how to protect his reputation as well.

The Cubs don't necessarily need to trade Byrd. If no one bites they still can keep him or trade him for nothing later in the season. They have already got their money's worth out of his contract as it is. As for Castro, his reputation is just fine. It is your reputation that is a joke.

I'm surprised that you're OK with the Cubbies continuing to trot out Byrd and Soriano as starting outfielders. Most Cubbie fans are ready to see what Brett Jackson can do. He is a year older than Castro.

By the way, you said Castro's defense is a work in process. Have you seen any improvement? If so, please share with us how he has improved that defense.

And I don't believe that I have posted anything negative about Rizzo. I haven't seen him play enough to form an opinion.
