11:31 AM ET 04.15 | SMU finally appears to be narrowing in on its next men's basketball coach. Marquette associate head coach Tony Benford interviewed in Dallas on Saturday, according to a source. Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown is scheduled to be in town to meet with SMU officials Sunday, according to another source. It appears one of the two will likely replace Matt Doherty, who was fired on March 13 after six seasons.

The truth is ... who wants to coach at a school with such tight constraints and oversight? SMU has gone to great lengths to run clean athletic programs since the DP. The oversight and their system of checks and balances is to be commended ... but it's hard to recruit top talent when you're a private school with high academic standards and you're playing by the rules.
