Motive behind Bettman's praise for Crosby?

11:19 AM ET 04.15 | This probably is just the echo of the Child of the '60s conspiracy-theorist rattling inside my brain, but is it wrong to wonder whether Gary Bettman's campaign on behalf of Sidney Crosby amplified by a tribute to his "greatness" on Monday is part of an effort to co-opt No. 87 when the collective bargaining talks commence in earnest following the playoffs? Understand: Crosby is a great player who competes every second of every shift and whose conduct off the ice is an enduring advertisement for the NHL and endorsement of the way he was raised by his family. But the Favored Son status granted to Crosby by Sixth Avenue does the star no favors among the larger constituency. Is it wrong to wonder if there's more to this than meets the ear?

Bettman sucks...

Exactly. You would think the Post would be more interested in the bloodbath last night at the Garden. How about threads like Holtby vs. Thomas? Last second thrills in Hawks-Yotes? Halak's injury and the Blues going to the Shark Tank? Instead we get this and one about the Leafs front office....really?

As much as the NHL and zebras have tried, they could not hand game one or two to the Penguins.

Slow day if this story gets in. Of course Bettman will praise one of the only cash cows they have. He needs Sid to sell the game.

April 15, 2012  04:04 PM ET

gutless.

He better start the bidding quick, as Sid and the gang are sleeping their way thru.

When did the Canucks start wearing orange jerseys? The Flyers have been diving since the beginning and Lavy is crying so much there a puddles forming in front of the Flyers bench. The Flyers are crying to the refs every chance they get so the refs are ignoring those poor defenseless Flyers and concentrating on the big bad Penguins.

By the way I'd give Schenn a 9.5 on that dive after the cross check by Ashaam. He gets hit in the chest so he snaps his head back and falls to the ice as if he were mortally wounded. Did he even miss a shift?

He went to the lockerroom for about 10 minutes.

Letang set the standard for dives. The Sedin's were seen up and applauding after his dive against Boston.

In a shock to absolutely no one, the Pens with more dirty play, Neal leaves his skates to go headhunting on Couturier, then takes a run high on Giroux.

I've never seen such dirty play from one franchise, top to bottom.

Hair pulling? Seriously, hair pulling? I'd be embarrassed to be a Pens fan after that travesty. What a gutless organization that is. My big fear now is Cooke will surely revert to form next game.

My, we are delusional on Sundays aren't we. And, I guess Couturier was faking after the cheap shot by Neal who left the ice to hit him way after the puck was gone? I can't wait for the excuses to start pouring in.

You obviously haven't been following the Flyers. They have set the standard, especially when playing the Penguins. All this is, is payback, and you know what they say about payback.

I'm not sure the play you're talking about with Couturier. Was it the one where Kunitz was going for the puck and he interfered with him, then took a dive? That was another great acting job by the Flyers.

I thought it was Kunitz, my bad. Couturier interfered with when he was going for the puck and he paid the price. I didn't see a penalty on that and I know the refs would have called something if it was illegal. Yeah it was a great acting job. I here some French soccer players were taking notes.

April 15, 2012  06:40 PM ET

And the picture of Scotty crying like a schoolgirl saying, He pulled my hair! I'm gonna tell! Bawl!

April 15, 2012  06:42 PM ET

I also liked that delayed dive by Giroux when Neal hit him. He looked around and then decided to try and draw a penalty. What a marooon!

And, here they come......

I got yer excuses and rationalizations right here. Come and get 'em. All you need to do is ignore reality and dismiss facts. Easy price to pay to continue supporting your dirty team.

Yeah, Neal left his feet to go headhunting. That should be a 3 game suspension. Asham with the high stick to the throat and then the suckerpunch to the back of the head of a player down. Let's not forget about Neal going right after Giroux as well. Plus that neato 3rd man in when Crosby went after Hartnell and suckerpunched him to the back of the head.

It was a travesty to the game I grew up playing and watching. It's a total embarrassment what the Penguins are trying to turn the game into.

Pittsburgh has been a dirty team for a long time now, it's just coming up to the forefront right now because of their latest actions, but it really isn't anything new.

It's just awful what the Pens are doing, they can't compete, so they are reliant on the dirty stuff.

this coming from the team who's president said this:

"Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be," the Penguins owner and Hall of Famer said in a statement released by the team. "But what happened Friday night on Long Island wasn't hockey. It was a travesty. It was painful to watch the game I love turn into a sideshow like that.
"The NHL had a chance to send a clear and strong message that those kinds of actions are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport. It failed."

OK Mario, your team is turning everything into a travesty, whatcha gonna do?
