Payton picked non-threat for his own good

08:00 AM ET 04.16 | In the eyes of many, the Saints are set up for a long season. Whatever happens in 2012, however good the season could theoretically go for the Saints, [Joe Vitt's] impact will be marginalized by his six-game suspension. But my suspicion is the Saints' 2012 season won't go that well at all, which I suspect would suit Sean Payton just fine. He wants to return in April 2013 as a martyr and a white knight. ... Keep in mind, Joe Vitt is not head-coach material. That's an important fact here, because the Saints have another guy on staff who absolutely is head-coach material. But Sean Payton didn't turn to that guy as the interim coach. Didn't even consider him, from what I can gather. Pete Carmichael is his name.

Projections about the Saints' season are all academic until punishments are announced for defensive players. If Goodell guts the D and Drew Brees is disgruntled from this contract fiasco, it won't matter who wears the HC hat.

Self-serving. This whole team is about to implode considering the suspensions, the Brees contract, and now, how management allows Payton to do something like this. WhoDat Nation needs to start stocking paper bags again.

Agreed, lets see who implodes the most; the Jest or the Aints

I think N'Olens will. Payton's job was never in jeopardy and the fact that he's so freakin paranoid as to let his team fail speaks volumes to anyone who may consider him for a position when things head south there.
I know the Jets have had a lot of stuff going on but they've survived drama (never to the Saints' degree) and I think they're good for another 8-8 season. Saints may win 4 games this season.

Brees is on record saying Vitt should be the interim HC. If it's a gone season anyway, throwing Drew a bone might not be the worst idea under the circumstances.

"...how management allows Payton..."
Lately I've had the feeling that Payton is running the show, certainly more so than Mickey Loomis. It might explain why the GM seems to have not had balls to stop the bounty program when he was told.

They say winning makes everything better and that's probably why this was all tolerated.

And it's come back to bite the Saints in the ass in a big way. I'm still surprised Mickey Loomis wasn't fired when details of the bounty program were made public.

May be the only thing they're willing to offer the way they've dragged contract negotiations out.

Why would management let the suspended coach pick his own replacement. That would be stupid. Then again why would you not have your franchise QB signed by now.

Its like being forced to pick the guy who is going to dig your grave: you want the guy that takes his time and maybe can't get the job done.

Saints are essentially out of consideration as a real NFL team again.
They were sick joke before bounty-gate.
They only won because they systematically cheated in the worst possible way, intentionally taking out competitors leadership and top talent.
If it wasn't for the Hurricane Katrina aftermath and the good nature of fellow Americans wanting to see the city recover, and the greatness (now irreversibly tarnished) of Drew Brees no one would have cared a rip about that team or that city.
No one should care now.

I have very little pitty for people who continue to live in a place that is naturally below sea level and then freak out when they get flooded. it's like living in torando alley and freaking out because your house got hit by one or living in the califorina wild fire areas and freaking out because your dog got burned to death by the fall fires.
that said, people did suffer a lot, but over six years later, I'm not rooting for them anymore. I'm expecting them to have pulled themsleves together. it's sad that their nfl team seemed to have done that only to fall apart with lies and malice.
