Wilson embraces chance to 'get a better arm'

08:09 AM ET 04.16 | Credit Brian Wilson for his optimism. An upbeat [Wilson] said Sunday he has complete confidence he'll be back pitching by this time next year, that the Giants won't miss him that much, and that he probably has been pitching on "borrowed time" since the end of the club's 2010 World Series season. ... Wilson underwent Tommy John elbow surgery in 2003 while pitching at LSU and said that while rehab will be tough, he has no concerns about his future in the game. "By no stretch of the imagination is my journey over with here,'' he said. "This is just a mild bump in my road. It's never been easy when I've pitched, or lived. So this is an opportunity for me to get a better arm, you know? How is that disappointing? I get to throw harder."

The game needs more characters like Brian Wilson. Don't make plans to attend any pity party for this dude.

if i get one thing from mr. wilson, it's that he is going to be extremely unhappy about being anywhere other than on the mound this summer.

Half the battle in life is just having the right frame of mind about your challenges. Good luck to the bearded one.

Surgery does not provide you with a better arm. It extends, if you are lucky, your shelf life a bit. This is clutching straws and only on the surface resembles a "winner's attitude". Perhaps he takes it with a sense of humour, and perhaps Yogi-Zen isn't too far off the truth here.

Great competitor....great attitude.....Giants legend.
No matter what happens to Wilson after this, he'll be a legend in SF Giants history forever. Here's to hoping he gets back and is on the mound in a Giants uni next year.

I don't see why. The Giants bats are actually coming alive this season (they're not going to lead the league in runs but all they have to do is put up decent offensive stats to be competitive). There are definately some early season quirks that need to be worked out, but I don't think many folks will expect Lincecum to struggle for long or Sandoval to continue his present Dr. Strangeglove imitation. Wilson's absence will definately hurt but he was out part of last season and the other relievers performed ably.

Good choice. I Prefer one of our many lakes to the coast, but if I must I'll head to N. Hampton or Rye beach and relax. I rarely venture into Hampton Beach unless there's a good show at the Casino.

Actually, the way they do the surgery, it often results in the ligament being stronger (most of the time, they replace a weak ligament with a stronger tendon). Plenty of guys come back and throw just as hard, if not harder, than they ever did.
