The knock on Darvish

08:15 AM ET 04.17 | Count one scout who saw Rangers righty Yu Darvish pitch against the Twins on Saturday among those who aren't especially impressed. "He's going to give up a ton of hits," the scout said. "A lot of his fastballs are very straight. The guy is supposed to throw hard. But he basically pitched at 89 to 92, touching 93-94. That's pretty good in Japan. It's not very good here. He has a good cutter, a good curveball. But when he gets in trouble, he turns into a breaking-ball guy -- nibble, nibble, he won't let it go. He reminded me of Dice-K." Darvish's results in his first two starts -- 17 hits allowed in 11 1/3 innings, nine strikeouts, eight walks -- support the scout's contentions.

He'll figure it out...

In the meantime, the Rangers bullpen will keep the ship sailing along.

.....those scouts are never wrong and are real bright boys....much smarter than 3 years work by ranger scouts, who are horrible judges of talent, jon daniels, nolan ryan and the maddox boys.......darvish will win cy young next 5 years in a row....

I dunno ... that's an awfully small sample size to make those kinds of statements, esp. based on the opinions of a single scout. The Rangers have had pretty good luck identify quality arms. It doesn't stand to reason they'd make a $100 million mistake based on ... what? Infatuation? Ignorance? Silliness?

You could say the same things about the Red Sox circa 2006/2007 and you know what, they made a $100m mistake.

I'm not saying this one was a mistake -- I'm actually hoping it's not -- but his first start was pretty much crap. I gave him a pass based on possible jitters, but a case could be made that his second start was worse. The more starts he has, the larger the book on him gets for the other MLB teams.

We'll see.

Well, it worked for the Red Sox?

Japanese pitchers never seem to live up to their advanced billing.

That's bad news...........

bad news or not, darvish and the rangers should enjoy their good timming and luck, darvish should win as many games, allow as many runs and walks, but this year he should win at least 21 games nothing more nothing less, walks who cares? he use to pitch 200 pitch count in every time he pitch as a starter in japan, but ones the hitters fix him, then there would be a very different ending in every game!!!

April 17, 2012  01:35 PM ET

Sounds about right for a japanese pitcher.

Nolan will give him Ryan Juice and all will be Well!!!

Um small sample size applies to END RESULTS. These guys are talking about Darvish's ABILITY. His ability only appears above average. His tendency seems to not to attack batters but be timid. "Small sample size" has nothing to do with these issues.

It is just a few games, he might not have his best stuff yet. I do wonder if the smaller Japanese ball might travel a bit faster, would make sense to me if it were the same weight but had less surface area.

The Japanese baseball is bigger than the American ball.

April 18, 2012  02:54 AM ET

The ball is about 2 thousandths of an inch bigger and harder (wound tighter) in Japan. The major difference, aside from the hardness, is that the seams/stitches are more raised on the Japanese ball, which allows for pitchers to get more movement on their pitches.

analcorn, where do you come up with this nonsense? How do you figure he'll win exactly 21 games this year? Is that derived from some formula you've been fine tuning? If you don't think walks matter at all then you're not paying attention to results. You claim he pitched "200 pitch count in every time he pitch as a starter in japan". Hate to bust your bubble but not once in 2011 did he exceed 145 pitches in any of his starts. He averaged 121 pitches a start in 2011. Not accounting for exact run totals, how many different endings can a game really have?
