4,000 in play for Jeter

08:16 AM ET 04.17 | It wasn't all that long ago that the notion would seem absurd. Derek Jeter opened the bottom half of the first inning for the Yankees on Monday night with a long home run into the right-field seats at Yankee Stadium. It was the 3,104th hit of his career. No. 3,105 came an inning later on an infield single. The Yankees captain and shortstop has been on a tear since this past July 9, when he roared past the 3,000-hit mark. And it's not a bit preposterous to believe that 4,000 hits is a real possibility, with that lofty plateau just 895 away. "I wouldn't put it [past] him," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said prior to Monday night's rare 7-3 Minnesota win in New York. "He doesn't look like he's aged."

He'd have to play full time for at least another 4 yrs to accomplish that feat.

I don't think so... playing shortstop for that long is just too gruelling. His body is going to start breaking down sooner than later. He doesn't have enough pop to keep him around as a DH or 1st baseman, so prolonging his career will be tough. My all-time favourite ballplayer though, hands down.

Hmm, remember when if a player started acting his age around 36 or so, and then suddenly was rejuvenated and acted 10 years younger the rumors immediately started? Why do we not hear any rumors now? Seriously, the guy's 38 and playing like he's 28. Why is he so taboo to say anything about?

I don't think he's going to play long enough to get nearly 900 more hits. For one thing, he's been on 5 World Series winners already, he's made plenty of money. There's no telling at this point when Jete is going to be satisfied and decide to do something else but my guess is it will be sooner rather than later. He's got to be sick of the media too by now.

He's only "started showing his age" last year when he was working on swing changes and working through injury issues. Once he changed his swing back to his original swing and got rested and healthy he was back to doing well.

Jeter's decline has been grossly exagerated.
