MJD's absence: It's about the money

08:00 AM ET 04.18 | Mike Mularkey made it clear Maurice Jones-Drew was under no obligation to attend the voluntary minicamp that opened Tuesday, though he did seem surprised to learn the absense might be about money. For the past couple of months, I've been hearing from team sources that Jones-Drew has been talking about a new deal. He has two years left on a contract he signed in 2009, but that deal makes him the eighth-highest paid running back in the league and he was the NFL's top rusher last season. So you can see his point. But you can also understand why the team would balk. Jones-Drew is entering his seventh season, but he's only been the primary rusher the past three. He isn't a big guy ... [and] the wearing-down factor has to be a concern.

Poor Jacksonville. One legit threat on offense and he's unhappy. That's some bad mojo.

Or maybe he's just house-hunting in LA.

This is the exactly same story from last season. Except the running back named was Chris Johnson.

I guess a little extra rest is a good idea when you're about to spend the whole season carrying a team on your back.

MIGHT be about the money? Is there ever any other reason? Altruism? Goodwill? The sudden urge to migrate?

Shut up and play Maurice. No one besides you and your agent want to hear about money. You make plenty.

Living in Jax, nothing surprises us about the daily soap opera that is the Jags. If we woke up and read they joined the lingerie league we would not miss a beat. They suck, have sucked, and will suck until they get serious about drafting and coaching

The team's concerns are MJD's concerns ... he is getting older, could be wearing down, might not have a lot of mileage left. The question is, who should assume the risk ... the team or the individual? MJD believes that the team is in a better position to assume the risk than he is as an individual. MJD understands that if he can't perform the team will cut him with no qualms or hesitation ... so he isn't hesitating to use the leverage he has today.

He lives in LA, he went to UCLA and still has a house there. He goes there each and every offseason for his workouts.
Anyway, the Jags will pay MJD and make him one of if not the highest paid RB in the league. MJD won't play soft after that though, like CJ did. MJD has incredible work ethic and always plays like he's out to prove someone wrong, he brings 110% every week. If he gets a big payday, I think that will be more incentive for him to bring it even harder this season.

This country has 14,000,000 unemployed and he's complaining about a contract worth millions of dollars? Let the greedy ****** never play another down and work at McDonald's for the rest of his life.
