The most underachieving Pens team in history?

08:16 AM ET 04.18 | Let's not forget the 1992-93 Penguins, which with Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Jaromir Jagr and Tom Barrasso was supposed to win a third Cup. The wound still oozes all of these years later. But here's what's amazing: The 2011-12 Penguins are looking at a much worse fate. Six days ago, they were the heavy favorites to win the Cup, a 4-to-1 betting choice when the next highest-rated teams were 11-to-2. Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang were back healthy and roaring to go. Evgeni Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury were the team's best players all season and the others were ready to follow their lead in the playoffs. No team is unbeatable, but this Penguins team appeared to be close.

You know, it will be tough to win with so many suspensions but, if they can win the next game without the goonery factory running, they do have the talent to pull this out. Will they? I doubt it, but watching Philly do it two years ago, anyone can do it.

2 years ago was a different set of circumstances. Savard was trying to come back from a dirty play and clearly wasn't himself and admitted it afterwards, Krejci got hurt in game 4 and at that point, the B's lost their best offensive player at the time. Seidenberg was also out and all those sorts of injuries/lost players caught up to them.

That the question is being asked speaks volumes

Or it is the media outlet that wanted to hand them the cup before the playoffs is backpeddling

Well then, appearances can be deceiving, afterall.

How long are they going to keep beating this Pens team to death on here. I am sure there are more then 3 stories out there per day that don't involve the Pens. Especially since they haven't even played in to days.

If it bleeds...

And people around here LOVE IT!

And to be honest, the more some of this gets beaten to death, the more insulting it is to the Flyers, actually, but whatever.

Who is this 'They' you refer to? The story came from the Post-Gazette, wouldn't that be Pittsburgh's hometown rag?

2005-06 Penguins were the most "underachieving" team they've had. They won 25 more games the following season.

It was also a loaded draft.

Nice try

The bad part is the Pens would have given any other team in the East a good run for their money. They let the Filthy Flyers get into their heads. They should know by now that the Flyers are going to get away with murder and the second you retaliate you're heading to the box.

It also hasn't helped that Fluery has let some softies in that let the Flyers dictate the play.

they built them up so much....and now can't wait to tear them down

Yup. And either next round, or next season, it may be someone else.

Hence, my statement yesterday that I like when they are the underdog. I think they play better.

Boston would have run them over like any other garden variety speed bump.

Again? T&R interns must hate the Pens.......

Which is incredibly easy for you to say now.
