Devils player blames himself for collapse

08:16 AM ET 04.18 | Credit Patrik Elias for his honesty after Tuesday's New Jersey meltdown. [Elias] accepted blame for the loss because his unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for knocking down Panthers defenseman Erik Gudbranson following an icing touch-up with 4:44 left in the first period turned the tide of the game. Sean Bergenhein scored on the resulting power play to start the Panthers' comeback from a 3-0 deficit. "It's just a stupid play by me," Elias said. "Stupid, totally uncalled for, wrong time, got the momentum going for them. So, it was a couple really bad decisions on my part today and it cost us this hockey game." ... [The] Devils had talked for two days about not taking penalties to keep the Panthers off the power play.

Sid, are you listening?

April 18, 2012  08:52 AM ET

That was like watching a redux of game 1 between the Pens and Flyers.

I was wondering what happened. i was busy, heard 3-0 Devils
i came back, saw 4-3 Florida...
Nice to see another guy stand up and take the heat.

The Panthers aren't the Flyers. When the game is being played fairly clean, a hit like that will fire the other team up. With all the (nonsense) that the Flyers are pulling nothing that Sid can do will change anything.

Please don't go there. I'm begging you.

Wow, accountability! Good on you, Patrik. You get points for not running through the litany of denial soundbites, like "I was just finishing my check" or "that's playoff hockey" or "I didn't think it was that bad, really." More of that kind of honesty can only help this game.

Just telling it like it is. Or whining depending upon your point of view.

You actually do seem to be in playoff form these days Spiny. I'm very impressed. Jealous too since I've been mostly in AHL game shape.

I'll tell you what...someone in here called me a "homer" a little bitago, and it really stung. I have never been that way, always prided myself on the whole fairness thing. So I am trying to ditch as much pettiness as I can.
But thanks for noticing

Where's the fun in that?

Thought of you this morning Spiny when I saw the title on one of the clips of the game on NHL.com and the title was "Runs in the Family".....and first thought was which of his female in-laws is Marty messing around with now??

April 18, 2012  10:14 AM ET

And this series still has a lot of hockey to be played, but honestly I did not think we would be up 2-1 at this point. This team still manages to impress me....and frankly shock me (when they're not giving me heart attacks defending a 1 goal lead that is).

But they haven't "won anything" just yet. Like I said...a long way to go before either team should get cocky or give up hope.

Although if you had told me our power play would be clicking like it has....I'd say you'd been into Hank's stash or something....

And, after the goal it was still 3-1 Devils, sooooo....
