08:08 AM ET 04.18 | At this point, there's no turning back for Luol Deng on his decision to play through a torn ligament in his left wrist. [After the season] comes another big decision: will Deng still need surgery to repair the damage to his left wrist, and if he does, will he wait until after the Olympics in August? Deng is the face of basketball in England, where he spent most of his childhood. He desperately wants to represent his country. ... [Doctors] really aren't sure how Luol's wrist will look after going through the NBA playoffs and the Olympics. But if Deng does need surgery sometime in September, he could easily miss the first two months of the next NBA season, something that has to be troubling to Bulls' management.

People aren't more fragile, it's the stress pro athletes put on their bodies that's gotten worse over the years (and the medical advances that both pin down more specifically what's wrong and make treatment decisions more critically exacting).

if he plays in the olympics (an exhibition) instead of surgery or rehab or whatever his employers doctors tell him to do.....the bulls should have the right to void his contract

Who cares about the Bulls anyway... they aint getting past the second round. Meanwhile Miami is doing all they can to win first place to avoid N E W Y O R K K N I C K S

Players are fragile these days. What happened to people to make them so... NON DURABLE?

It's not that players are more fragile today.....it's that they're stronger and more physical.

You gotta understand that muscles may get bigger......bones may get bigger......but cartilage in the knee of a 300lb athlete is the same as that in a 180lb non-athlete. And ligaments/tendens in a 300lb athlete is not that much stronger/bigger than tendens in a 200lb athlete.

As a result, you have bigger/stronger athletes hammaring each other, doing big orthopedic joint damage to each other.

Then......you have a basic change in culture in pro sports over the past 30-40 years.

Up into the 80's, if a player got a joint injury, he got a cortisone shot....or other pain killers......and kept playing.......had to protect his job! And remember, they didn't get paid so much, so they didn't have big $$$$ in the bank; pro athletes NEEDED that paycheck. Also, the player unions were weak or non-existant......injured players who couldn't take the field often got cut; and the player had no recourse....no guaranteed or multi-year contracts back then (those were relatively recent occurrences). Teams were NOT inclined to rehabilitate players like today.....so players HAD to keep playing.....even the great ones had to play through crippling injuries (Mickey Mantle).

I mean.....there are lots of reasons pro athletes miss more games now than before.....but a general LACK of durability ain't one of them.

They won't.

What people COMPLETELY fail to understand, is that while D.Rose may be the star of the Bulls.....Deng is the glue that holds them together.

That's why all the talk people were doing last year about trading Deng (for Carmelo, of all people) was so ridiculous!

If he's out.....he's out.....and the Bulls ain't about to hold it against him if he plays in the Olympics.....they'll deal with it!

Kobe played w/ a torn ligament last year and I'm not sure if he even had surgery. Just tape it up and play.

I don't know about last year......but he's playing with a torn ligament in his wrist THIS year.....right now!

Which is what Deng is doing.

They'll BOTH need surgery to repair their ligaments.

Deng won't be 100% again until next January, or so.

Rip won't be 100% again.
