Hockey's preeminent head hunter

08:18 AM ET 04.18 | This playoff season has become, at times, more about suspended players than the game on the ice, and Raffi Torres may be next. From Milan Michalek, to Brent Seabrook, to Marian Hossa, to Jordan Eberle, to Andrew Ference, to Jan Hejda, to Nate Prosser, Torres has never met an opponent he had an ounce of respect for. Today he is the game's preeminent head hunter. Today, Raffi Torres is clearly, the biggest punk in the game of hockey. On Tuesday night Torres claimed the belt, as well as his latest victim, with a typically predatory hit on Hossa. It was like so many others by Torres, who floats from team to team to team, each one pleased that they've picked up "a game-changer," then liking themselves even more when they part ways.

I saw this last night and immediately thought of Seabrooke. You know, there is only so much Shanahan can do without the help of the REF's. This should have been a match major.
C'mon refs, pick up your game.

It was one of the worst hit's I've seen over the last few years. there was no need for it, it was from the blindside and targeted the head. Hossa had released the puck a while before and Torres left his feet to make sure he caught him flush in the head.
Torres is gone for the rest of the year and it's hits like this that make people scream for a new suspension rule.
If you intentionally injure a player, you are out for the length of time the player you hurt is and after the player gets back that was hurt, then you begin your suspension. If you end someone's career, oh well, you're is over as well. Oh, and the cap hit does not leave the team, players like Torres and others have a rep that teams know about before they sign them.
Possibly a fine for the team as well, make the teams not want to bring these guys in. There are quite a few players who've gone from team to team intentionally injuring players in their path. Torres isn't the first, but will hopefully be the last.

No room in this great sport for this nonsense. The game is plenty violent when it is played cleanly.

Where were the officials when this happened? How did it not get called?

Great question, I have no idea how four of them missed that. Sad thing is Quennville is going to get fined more then Torres. The hit would have had the same affect if he stayed on his feet and leveled his chest.

Forget the refs, Shanny isn't going to get rid of this kind of thing unless and until the players wise up and stop doing this kind of thing.
Has anyone heard about Hossa's condition?

At home, released from the hospital last night. One report I heard is that he had no movement in his extremities right after the incident, but must be better or they wouldn't let him leave.
As far as getting rid of it, make it hurt the teams, then suddenly these players won't be wanted anymore. If teams get hammered along with the players who do the dirty play, the dirty players will no longer have a place to play. Problem fixes itself.
Plus, let's all be honest about it. Matt Cooke didn't suddenly clean up his game because it was the "right" thing to do, he did it because it became a financial liability to play like a punk. It was the massive suspension and loss of pay that finally got his attention. That's the tact to take, really make these players and teams think about it after it happens.

Unless you live in his house, you don't know why Matt Cooke or others cleane up their game.

fine/suspend for checking while leaving your feet. Too many guys in the league leave their feet when hitting.

I'm just about done watching the NHL playoffs. This isn't even hockey anymore. It's like I'm watching MMA or something.
Every team seems to be "head hunting". You really want to stop the thuggish style of play, just start letting it be known that they will start suspending anybody who takes cheap shots like this for the remainder of the playoffs and possibly more games in the beginning of next season. I'm tired of the players thinking that they are willing to take a one or two game suspension if they can take out a player on the other side.

That's good to hear.
You make a good point about hurting the team more. They might want to consider a repeat offender/series injury penalty that would require the offending team to send a high draft pick to the other team.
From what I heard, I think that the League and Mario sat down with Matthew and told him no more! You hurt anyone else with a cheap shot and you're out of the game. From the look of fear on his face the couple times he has hurt people this year I think that is the case.

Possible but not probable.
Believe it or not, people can change, contrary to popular belief. The money he's getting paid, the fines meant nothing. Start suspending players for 20-50 games without pay and lets see how fast the game overall gets cleaned up.

I've said this before and I'll say it again...Shanny's been over his head since the pre-season.
He's a joke with his little video clips!
And yes, the zebras blew it.

and because of the culture...and the sensationalist reporting...someone now is going to run at one of their guys.
1) refs need to start tossing people
2) Colon Shananhan needs to play this gig like he did as a player. Sit someone...not necessarily Torres, because he is useless as a player... but someone with a NAME...for 5..6..7 games
