Lannan becoming impossible to move

08:10 AM ET 04.19 | Washington may have an albatross on its hands. The Nationals are still looking for a taker for left-hander John Lannan, but it is nearly impossible to trade him, according to a baseball source. It hasn't helped that Lannan is off to a slow start with Triple-A Syracuse. Entering Wednesday's action, Lannan has allowed nine earned runs in six innings. Another factor in Lannan's low trade appeal is that opposing teams don't want to take on the left-hander's $5 million salary, especially since a lot of teams consider Lannan no more than a fifth starter. As one opposing executive put it, "teams would rather use a low-paid Minor Leaguer for the fifth spot before dealing with Lannan's money."

I still say the Nats hang on to him. $5 million is Monopoly money in baseball terms for most teams. A left-handed pitcher with a proven track record, regardless of the slow start, is a valuable trading chip, if nothing else.

It looks like he's not helping his own cause by stinking it up down in Triple A.

Too many proven pitchers? Oh, what a horrible albatross to have hanging around your neck.

Last start he looked okay in the minors.... One thing for sure. He has NO spot on the Nationals rotation with the way everyone is pitching, now.

Oh snap wait... He stunk yesterday.

The Nats do not have to rush to unload Lannan. He's a lefty and has had some success in the past. He'll even out his rough start in triple A and by June, he'll be wanted on some MLB roster, either in WDC or elsewhere.

He could join Melancon as a batting practice pitcher for the Rangers.

I agree they'll find someone who wants him, but they'll have to pick up part of that contract.

Their pitching staff is not filled with aces.

The time has come to stop giving average players four to eight million dollars a year............. Salaries are becoming a joke.........Work in the real world for awhile.........

the OWNERS, then the GM'S then the agents, the owners shouldn't give long term deals, regardless who or what type of profile the player has, unless the deal its 20 to 30 millions 4 years contract, other than that its wasted money and time!!!!!!

if lannan its pitching poorly in the minors, its becvause he lacks in motivation, means if he was pitching in the majors would be a completely different history, just because the angels had decide not to compete this year or else the halos would trade abreu to the nationals for a fifth starter, and what's more advantage for the anaheim team the 5 starter would be a fine lefty!!!

That's true, but those bats are good. That's a very good team.

Those "non-aces" have won a lot of games the past few years. And Holland is very close to ace status (see his stats last year). Wouldn't surprise me if Feliz becomes a front of the line starter, either.

I'll take Nolan Ryan and Mike Maddux. Sometimes it's better to have the cow than the milk.
